Public Policy Manager (Cesar Chavez PCS)

POSITION SUMMARY

The Public Policy Manager is responsible for the strategic planning and successful execution of the Public Policy Program for Chavez Schools. The Manager will partner with school leadership to design a comprehensive public policy curriculum for students as well as instruct public policy classes on a half-time schedule. The Manager works collaboratively with all campus personnel for the seamless planning and execution of all activities of the public policy program at Chavez Schools including, but not limited to, designing/adopting a comprehensive curriculum, cultivating public policy partnerships, scheduling field experiences, and identifying external community events, and providing professional development to teachers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee the ongoing review and revision of the public policy curriculum and collaborate with teachers to ensure successful implementation of courses.
  • Identify and cultivate external partnerships for policy courses, programs, events, and opportunities.
  • Plan and execute events within the public policy curriculum, such as the City Council Day, We the People competition, and Annual Public Policy Symposium.
  • Lead the coordination of updated CAP and CAPstone experience.
  • Manage all logistics of Chavez’s Fellowship program, including securing partners, setting up student interviews, matching students, orientation, and evaluation of program.
  • Work with school leadership to identify and organize events related to the public policy curriculum that reflect current issues for students such as environmental field trips and policy summits.
  • Lead the development of new programs for students to engage with public policy and support college and career readiness such as career day and shadowing opportunities.
  • Meet regularly with school leadership and teacher-leaders to ensure the seamless integration of public policy programming and courses.
  • Design and implement a comprehensive approach to assess the effectiveness of public policy experiences through surveys, pre- and post- tests, teacher feedback, focus groups, etc.
  • Manage the public policy budget.
  • Provide direct instruction and support to scholars in public policy courses for up to half-time, adhering to all instructional expectations.
  • Perform additional duties assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILL REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university required; Advanced degree in teaching, curriculum, public policy, or a related specialty preferred.
  • A minimum of three years of secondary teaching experience required.
  • Strong content knowledge in social studies and Common Core history/social studies standards.
  • Knowledge of the public policy landscape at the local and national levels.
  • Experience designing curriculum and providing professional development to teachers preferred. 
  • Experience overseeing public policy-related student programming such as Model United Nations, We the People, Street Law, debate etc. strongly preferred.
  • Proven experience building student-related community partnerships.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to connect with and develop relationships with a wide range of individuals.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to coordinate several projects simultaneously and track complex tasks across multiple stakeholders.
  • Careful attention to detail and proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Impeccable judgment and strong decision-making skills.
  • Ability to adapt to challenges and opportunities with a solution-oriented perspective.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment both independently and with a team.
  • Flexible and willing to perform other tasks as assigned.
