Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, this position will be responsible for directing the philanthropic activities of NHPCO to assist in promoting the mission and vision of the organization. The incumbent will be responsible for developing and directing the strategy and processes of philanthropy and fund development, with a focus on major gifts and events/fundraisers. Other responsibilities include: developing and fostering partnerships and philanthropic relationships with external organizations; developing and implementing all aspects of the organization’s special event planning, including sponsorship procurement, solicitation, on-site management, financial reporting, fundraising, sales, and event follow-up; and collaborating with senior leadership and other development staff to determine grant opportunities, write proposals, and manage any procured grants. Essential duties include the following:


Supervisory Responsibilities


Directly supervises one or more employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.


  • Directs the development, implementation, and evaluation of corporate giving, annual giving, and signature event development activities as part of the organization’s overall strategic plan.
  • Works with the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer, and designated staff to execute the strategic plan for philanthropy.
  • Leads all aspects of special/signature events, including sponsorship procurement, solicitation, on-site management, financial reporting, fundraising, sales, and event follow-up.
  • Facilitates development of collaterals related to events, including promotional pieces, invitations, sponsor recognition materials and event programs, and others.
  • Communicates with all staff regarding special events to assure seamless support and coordination across the entire organization.
  • Participates in and/or leads event-related meetings.
  • Directs the activities of the Signature Events Council.
  • Manages the development of philanthropic relationships with members and other providers, consumer organizations, grant makers, and other philanthropic entities.
  • Coordinates with the development staff to research opportunities for grants, maintains grant maker profiles, writes applications, and stewards relationships with grant makers.
  • Manages a portfolio of current and prospective donors ($25K+) in order to develop and maintain solid relationships that elicit philanthropic support from various constituents (professionals, consumers, friends, and foundations) for NHPCO.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with Board of Directors and major donors as assigned for potential planned giving and major gifts.
  • Provides oversight of all prospect research activities.
  • Directs the communication and solicitation strategy for different segments in the annual giving program.
  • Devises methods of appeal strategies and timing.

Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s degree in a related field required, Master’s preferred, along with seven to ten years of fundraising experience and organizational leadership, preferably in a non-profit and/or a hospice setting; demonstrated vision for successfully implementing philanthropic goals to advance the success of an organization. Experience managing special events and fundraisers is required. National development and public/media relations experience is preferred. 


Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

CFRE preferred.


Computer Skills                                                     

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite and of computer-based membership database systems.


Other Requirements

Ability to work extended hours during peak times; ability to travel by air and for extended periods.
