The Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC) is seeking a full-time Communications Associate based in our San Francisco office. This is an exempt position that reports to the Senior Communications Manager. It is a hands-on, fast-paced role that will support and contribute to the growth of all aspects of the ILRC’s communications endeavors.

The ILRC is a national nonprofit legal support center located in San Francisco, California and Washington, D.C. The mission of the ILRC is to work with, educate, and enhance the capacity of immigrants, community organizations, and the legal sector, in order to build a democratic society that values diversity, dignity, and the rights of all people. Founded in 1979, the ILRC is regarded as one of the foremost experts on engaging immigrants and developing their leadership in the democratic process, providing expertise on complex issues of immigration law, procedure and policy, and engaging in advocacy and educational initiatives on policies that affect immigrants. We are a team-based organization that makes most of its decisions in a collaborative fashion that allows for significant staff input.

The ILRC is currently scaling up our communications program, and this role will play an integral part in increasing our capacity to publish and promote our organizational content and programs, as well as promoting the work of our partners in the fight for immigrant rights. This position is designed for a self-starter who thrives in a collaborative environment and can also work independently. The ideal candidate will help establish areas of priority with the Senior Communications Manager for the organization’s communications agenda. This position will play an essential part in implementing the ILRC’s communications strategy, which elevates and advances the ILRC’s mission.


Primary Goals: The goals of the position and the ILRC’s communications strategy are to:

  • Leverage the ILRC’s programs and expertise, which advocate for policies that improve the lives of immigrants and enhance best practices in the field of immigration and criminal law.
  • Position the ILRC as a major player in immigration policy on the local, state, and national levels.
  • Provide clarity and insight into immigration policy and law for immigrant communities, the media, and the public.
  • Develop and execute internal processes and infrastructure that amplify the ILRC’s major projects, programs, and areas of expertise through media relations, digital media, on-the-ground advocacy support, partner communications, and other strategies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the development and implementation multi-faceted communications plans, which include message development, web presence, advocacy, and social media to educate, motivate, and influence target audiences.
  • Assist in cultivating and maintaining relationships with national, state, and local journalists who cover immigration and civil rights issues.
  • Identify opportunities for communications engagement, and provide front-line support in drafting content, including talking points, press releases, op-eds, blog posts, factsheets, and digital content like social media.
  • Serve as the primary or supporting producer for ILRC’s communications-driven editorial products like blog posts, reports, and op-eds.
  • Provide communications support to key partners in the ILRC’s network.
  • Provide day-to-day management and content development for the ILRC’s social media channels and campaigns, including editorial and graphic posts.
  • Attend organizational meetings and events to identify communications opportunities.


Job Experience & Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, journalism, media studies, public policy, or a field closely related to the ILRC’s work preferred.
  • Between 3-5 years of experience in advocacy, public relations, communications, or a communications-adjacent role in a professional office environment; nonprofit, advocacy, or agency experience a plus.
  • 2-3 years of experience with professional, legal, or advocacy-oriented writing preferred.
  • Experience with digital communications, social media, graphic design, and CMS web management is highly valued.
  • Experience as or working with journalists and members of the media is a plus.

Core Competencies:

  • Motivated self-starter with demonstrated good judgement, critical thinking, flexibility, resourcefulness, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skill are required, along with a demonstrated ability to compose and edit effective, thoughtful, and strategic communications across a variety of platforms.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work collaboratively with others in a team environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, while maintaining a firm grasp on individual project details and deadlines.
  • Experience implementing a communications strategy via social media, earned media, and digital media, as well as at events and through other channels.
  • Experience in communicating complex issues to a variety of audiences.
  • Strong, detail-oriented organizational skills are required, as well as the ability to follow projects through to completion.


Pay is commensurate with experience, with an expected range between $60,000-75,000 annually. The ILRC offers excellent benefits, health/dental/vision insurance, a flexible spending account for medical and dependent care, vacation, and sick leave. The ILRC also sponsors a retirement plan option upon fulfillment of eligibility.
