Housing and Eviction Prevention Specialist

The Housing Specialist assesses the needs of low-income tenants, especially those at risk of facing eviction.  The Specialist reports directly to the Executive Director, and is responsible for all aspects of the program including: verifying information, mediating between landlord and tenant, advocating for client at court and with appropriate governmental agencies, recertifying or enrolling the client in the appropriate benefits, and referring client for legal assistance as needed.


Program Goals:

1.      Eviction prevention.

2.      Help tenants obtain needed repairs.

3.      Help to resolve any legal issues related to housing.

4.      Help resolve any disputes between tenants and landlords.

5.      Help program participants achieve future ability to pay rent by renewing or securing new benefits.


Tasks:

1.     Interview clients requesting assistance with eviction prevention.

2.    Obtain and verify relevant information.

3.     Maintain complete client case files and records.

4.    Negotiate with property owner where appropriate, advocate on behalf of clients at Housing Court, and connect with representatives from government agencies to assist with obtaining benefits.

5.  Complete reports to funders as required. 

6.     Regularly update the Executive Director on contract progress.


Bachelor’s Degree required. Familiarity with Housing Court a plus. Candidate must be a self-starter with experience in community organizing, public benefits, and/or rent stabilization and housing law.  Must be computer literate with knowledge of Access, Microsoft Word, and ability to quickly learn city agency online platforms.   Some Spanish speaking ability is helpful.


Due to the fact that many of our clients are monolingual non-English speakers and non-fluent with computers/internet, and due to our contracts requiring an in person presence, working from the office is required. That being said, some remote work is negotiable.


Pay = $42,000 with a benefits package (4 paid weeks of vacation, health insurance, etc.)
