National Housing Trust (NHT) has been dedicated to creating and preserving affordable housing for almost 40 years. Our mission is to create and preserve affordable homes to provide opportunity, advance racial equity, reduce economic disparities, and strengthen community resilience through our integrated policy-plus-practice approach. We build, preserve, and finance affordable housing and use that expertise to inform and advance resident-focused solutions to strengthen the broader affordable housing industry.

NHT has a staff of 58 across five program areas: Policy, Lending, Real Estate Development, Community Outreach and Impact, and Sustainability. POSITION

This is an exciting opportunity to impact more than 2,000 households in affordable housing communities located in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia (DMV) region. This is a unique opportunity to work with an organization dedicated to the success of the affordable housing communities and residents in which we serve. In addition, the position will receive additional professional development support through Literacy Minnesota, an organization committed to sharing the power of learning through education, community building and advocacy.

With support from Literacy Minnesota, the Financial Empowerment VISTA will expand existing, community-level financial stability and wellness services across eleven affordable housing communities in Washington D.C. Maryland and Virginia. The VISTA's work will focus on providing long-term, sustainable solutions for residents living in NHT communities and support financial wellness and housing stability programs within NHT's Community Outreach and Impact team.

Essential to success will be a flexible, compassionate self-starter with a passion for wealth-building initiatives among low-income families. The Financial Empowerment VISTA will be supported by the Managing Director of Community Outreach and Impact, COI Operations Manager, Resident Service Coordinators, and community stakeholders to ensure appropriate programmatic planning, implementation and management. The Financial Empowerment VISTA will be supervised by the COI Operations Manager.

This position is DC-based. Due to the nature of the work, this position offers limited remote work options.

RESPONSIBILITIES

CONDUCT NEEDS AND ASSETS ASSESSMENT

• Evaluate existing and identify new services related to financial literacy services with a focus on meeting the needs identified by residents and Resident Service Coordinators (RSCs) onsite.

• Assist in the collection of resident survey data in order to determine community-specific needs.

DEVELOP, DESIGN AND ENHANCE PROGRAM CONTENT

• Strengthen existing services related to financial literacy services with a focus on holistic wealth-building, workforce development and college

• Develop new services related to financial literacy services informed by the needs assessment.

• Train RSCs as facilitators of any new or revised services.

• Support administration needs of other COI programs and services as needed.

DESIGN AND CONDUCT PROGRAM EVALUTION

• Develop standardized evaluation tools for financial literacy services that center resident agency and racial equity.

• Using developed evaluation tools, the VISTA will collect data that guides necessary program improvements via Salesforce.

• Develop sustainability manual to document project and pass on key information to future staff members in this role.

DEVELOP AND STRENGTHEN GOALS, PERFORMANCE TARGETS AND MILESTONES

• Design program metrics and success indicators for financial literacy services that are tracked in Salesforce.

• Work with the Managing Director of COI and COI Operations Manager to develop program metrics and outcomes as it relates to financial literacy programs and services.

DEVELOP AND NURTURE PARTNERSHIPS

• Support RSCs in resident outreach for existing and new financial literacy services.

• Train the RSCs on developed outcomes to increase program involvement and resident impact.

COLLABORATION WITH THE COI TEAM, LITERACY MINNESOTA AND ONSITE STAFF

• Participate in monthly meetings with the Managing Director of COI.

• Meet regularly with the COI team to discuss project progress and milestone achievements.

• Participate in monthly training sessions conducted by Literacy Minnesota,

• Collaborative spirit and positive attitude (a good sense of humor is a plus); and

• Spanish language skills are a plus.

DURATION AND HOURS: This is a one-year position. The VISTA will work a full-time, 40-hour work week and is available to anyone in the United States. Candidates located in the DMV will a work a hybrid schedule at the discretion of the department supervisor. The expected start date for this position is July 15, 2024.

COMPENSATION: AmeriCorps VISTAs are allotted a bi-weekly living allowance and an education award to be awarded at the completion of the service year, in addition to the vast AmeriCorps Alumni network and professional development opportunities provided from AmeriCorps, Literacy Minnesota and NHT. For candidates living in the DMV, they are eligible to receive an additional monthly stipend of $1,000 for housing costs. NHT will also support any academic or training programs relevant to award of academic credit for the experience.
