Founded in 1990, the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) provides free civil legal services to low-income New Yorkers. The organization serves immigrants, seniors, the homebound, families facing foreclosure, renters facing eviction, low-income consumers, those in need of government assistance, children in need of special education, domestic violence victims, persons with disabilities, patients with chronic illness or disease, low-wage workers, low-income members of the LGBTQ community, Holocaust survivors, and others in need. The organization’s annual operating budget is over $30 million. Serving more than 87,000 New Yorkers annually, New York Legal Assistance Group maintains a paid staff of approximately 290, supported by 2,200 pro bono attorneys and other volunteers and interns. Job Description:

NYLAG has an opening for a part-time (20 to 28 hours a week) intake attorney in its Legal Clinic for Pro Se Litigants in the Southern District of New York to begin work in early September 2019. The intake attorney will provide direct legal assistance to the Clinic’s litigants at the office in the SDNY Courthouse at 40 Foley Square in Manhattan. The Clinic is one of the first clinics in the nation to provide free, individual legal assistance to non-prisoner, pro se litigants in federal court. The Clinic provides assistance at all stages of federal litigation to persons representing themselves in an incredibly diverse range of cases including, among others, civil rights, labor and employment, intellectual property, and social security.



Duties and Responsibilities:

The part-time intake attorney will have direct responsibility for the reception of pro se litigants at the Clinic including ensuring that phone calls to the Clinic are timely returned, client screening consultations, and maintaining complete and accurate records of those interactions. To perform these duties the intake attorney will also supervise and manage intake volunteers including providing first day orientation and training. To ensure appropriate recordkeeping, the intake attorney will update current systems and develop others to simplify and streamline the intake process for both volunteers and litigants. The intake attorney will also provide follow up consultations to pro se litigants and perform other duties and responsibilities related to Clinic operations.


Direct legal assistance will include:

·        counseling on filing cases in federal court, including regarding jurisdictional issues;

·        substantive and procedural legal advice on questions that may arise at any stage of litigation;

·        review with pro se litigants of court orders, opposition pleadings, discovery processes, and court rules and procedures;

·        assistance on motion practice, discovery, and litigation strategy;

·        assistance with preparation for depositions, conferences, hearings, mediations, and other court appearances;

·        referrals to other agencies and organizations, including pro bono assistance, to other legal services organizations, and to mental health agencies.


To carry out these duties the intake attorney will work closely with other Clinic staff and volunteers and courthouse staff who serve pro se litigants.



Qualifications:

 

·        Admission in the Southern District of New York (or ability to attain soon after starting) required.

·        Experience providing direct legal services to a diverse population required.

·        Experience in federal litigation preferred, especially employment and civil rights law.

·        Fluency in Spanish preferred.

·        Excellent research and communication skills.

·        Sensitivity to different backgrounds, cultures, and personal situations.

·        Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
