Bike Education Instructors play a key role in getting more people on bikes in Metro Vancouver by teaching engaging educational courses that reach thousands of youth and adults annually. Position Summary:

We are hiring several full-time and part-time Instructors to join our growing Bike Education team. Under the direction of the Instructor Manager, Bike Education Instructors work on a seasonal basis and teach a variety of courses. Instructors primarily work Bike to School programs, which are delivered in elementary and middle schools and take place during school hours. Occasional engagement with community StreetWise programs outside of these hours may also be involved. This position entails frequent travel around the region and can be fairly physical, requiring enthusiasm and high levels of energy. 

Primary Responsibilities:

• Set up and deliver HUB educational courses in a professional, enthusiastic and fun manner; 
• Motivate diverse youth and maintain their engagement during in-class and on-bike course delivery; 
• Transport yourself, and sometimes program equipment (i.e. bikes, helmets, and other course gear), to schools across Metro Vancouver daily
• Encourage youth and other program participants to see cycling as a viable mode of transportation;
• Ensure program documents (e.g. waivers, surveys) are completed and submitted in a timely manner;
• Communicate consistently and promptly with supervisors regarding scheduling, course feedback, and any incidents that occur while on-site;
• Maintain safety and risk mitigation practices.

You are someone who:

• Believes in the benefits of cycling, is confident riding a bicycle for transportation and demonstrates responsible city cycling skills;
• Enjoys working with youth aged 8-14;
• Is confident and enthusiastic when instructing groups of varying sizes in the classroom and outdoors; 
• Is adaptable and flexible: can adjust teaching styles to different learners’ needs; 
• Can interact professionally with school staff members and parents;
• Is friendly, patient and works well as part of a team;
• Values open and proactive communication with teammates and supervisors.

Required Qualifications:

• Standard First Aid & CPR-C certification, or willingness to self-organize and obtain before Sep. 19; 
• Bike Right certified, or available to participate in the Advance Your Ride course likely to be held on the weekend of Sep. 10-11 (9am - 5pm, both days). View details at bikehub.ca/bike-education/AYR ; 
• Clear Criminal Record Check for the Vulnerable Sector; 
• Available to work during the upcoming fall season (Sep. 7 - Nov. 10, 2022); 
• Flexible weekday schedule or can commit to all-day availability on specific weekdays, plus at least one Saturday if requested.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience leading programs for youth;
• Valid BC driver’s licence and comfort driving a full-size van for equipment transportation;
• Knowledge of basic bike maintenance.

Terms: This is a seasonal position. The number of shifts vary from week to week depending on Instructor availability and programming needs. Instructors must be willing to travel within Metro Vancouver to instruct courses (owning a vehicle is not required), and can expect some early morning start times for travel to program locations. Successful candidates may continue on to teach in the spring (April through June) and successive seasons. Upfront fees for Standard First Aid and Advance Your Ride certification courses are the responsibility of participants, although conditional reimbursement is available for the latter.  

Start date:  Paid training for new Instructors will likely take place Sep. 7 & 8, and course instruction will begin Sep. 19.
