United Parents and Students (UPAS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to empowering communities to become powerful self-advocates for quality schools and sustainable neighborhood revitalization. UPAS partners with local public schools and community-based organizations to create training centers that teach families the formal skills of community organizing and authentic civic engagement.


OPPORTUNITY

The Community Engagement Coordinator’s role is to engage and organize families at 3-4 school sites around issues of concern in their community and city that pose barriers to learning and local quality of life. This entails relationship building with parents and students, training families in the skills of community organizing, and supporting them in building a base to meet with public officials. The Coordinator also facilitates 1-2 organization-wide campaigns on issues such as housing, violence prevention, digital divide, and food justice, and leads efforts to bolster civic engagement at the school sites. The Coordinator will be self-motivated, a team player, detail-oriented and take initiative.

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

> Hold 1-on-1 meetings, house meetings, leadership team meetings and trainings with parents and students, in order to build relationships, identify issues of concern, develop plans of action, and support families in learning the skills of community organizing

> Support families in holding local and regional actions, in which they meet with public officials around issues of concern in their community

> Coordinate 1-2 organization-wide campaigns on issues such as housing, violence prevention, digital divide, and food justice

> Serve as the school-site expert on civic engagement and lead on-campus non-partisan voter registration work

> Identify, develop and support parent volunteers for non-partisan voter registration and GOTV campaigns by providing training on voter registration and phone banking

> Manage voter registration life cycle from form collection through submission to the county and request voter registration cards on an as-needed basis

> Staff non-partisan campaign events including tabling and phone banking

> Disseminate communications across various platforms to target outreach lists including mass emails, flyers, mailers, phone banks, etc.

> Track, enter, and maintain data on voter registration and participation in events in data platform; Generate reports to identify target outreach recipients, evaluate event attendance, measure efficacy of community initiatives and provide progress to goal updates to manager

> Assist with the connection of schools and families to local resources

> Solicit new partnerships to serve families and coordinate implementation of existing partnerships

> Drive parent participation in annual assemblies and organization-wide events

>Translate documents and interpret parent and student meetings

>Participate in United Parents & Students professional development programs

>Participate in other events aimed at promoting or developing United Parents & Students

>Additional duties as assigned


This job is a combined home office and school site position, with the majority of time spent at school sites. The position utilizes typical office equipment (computers, phones, photocopiers, etc.). Normal business hours are 8:30am – 5:00pm, Monday-Friday (although these hours may vary and do require evening and weekend work based on organizational needs). Travel is often required between school sites in Los Angeles County and the Home Office.


QUALIFICATIONS

> A Bachelor’s degree with a demonstrated track record of academic success preferred

> Spanish fluency preferred

> Prior community organizing experience preferred

> You are able to influence and motivate others

> You are a demonstrated team player

> You are organized and detail oriented

> You are able to build trusting and meaningful relationships

> You show a demonstrated commitment to community and civic engagement

> You are a self-starter, with ability to work independently

> You have a demonstrated desire for ongoing learning and development

> You have experience with databases, and are proficient with Excel

> You have the ability to learn new technological platforms quickly

> You have personal transportation to travel between school sites

> You are dependable, humble, have a sense of humor and a rock-solid commitment to UPAS’ mission and the communities we serve

> You will need to pass a TB test and background check at time of offer

Salary

$60,000 - $65,000The annual salary range for this position is $60,000-$65,000, commensurate with experience.
