Description

Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s Children’s Education programs are world renowned for teaching hands-on gardening and plant science to children and teens. Children’s Garden seasonal instructors develop and teach age-appropriate gardening lessons to a group of up to 12 children with the assistance of two to three teen apprentices from our Garden Apprentice Program. Instructors must participate in a training session prior to teaching each season in the Children’s Garden program. Brooklyn Botanic Garden is looking to hire up to six instructors. Hiring is based on program enrollment.


Primary Responsibilities:

Seeds and City Farmers:

·        Lead an age-based group of 12 children in hands-on gardening instruction in a half-acre edible garden (ages 4–6; 7–9; or 10–13).

·        Mentor two to three teen apprentices, who assist instructors in facilitating their group.

·        Develop and lead supplementary enrichment activities such as seasonal cooking activities or nature crafts.

·        Ensure that each assigned garden plot is planted out and maintained according to weekly tasks.                            

Trees and Saplings:

·        Work in a team to design, prepare, and teach hands-on gardening lessons to a group of 10 young children and their adult partners.

·        Ensure that each assigned garden plot is planted out and maintained according to weekly tasks.

·        Develop and lead supplementary enrichment activities such as seasonal cooking activities or nature crafts.


Schedule:


Mandatory training

·        Friday, September 7 | 9 a.m.–4 p.m.


Teaching activities (Seeds and City Farmers)

·        6 Fridays, September 14, 21, 28; October 12, 19, 26 | 2–6 p.m.;

·        7 Saturdays, September 8, 15, 22, 29; October 13, 20, 27 (no classes Columbus Day weekend) | 9 a.m.–3:30 p.m. 

Qualifications:

·        College-level studies or career experience in education, urban agriculture, nutrition, botany, or environmental or biological sciences

·        Experience teaching children

·        Gardening experience preferred

·        Experience and comfort working with youth and staff from diverse backgrounds

  • Clearance of fingerprinting and background check
