Job Description:

InnerCity Struggle is seeking an Academic Advisor to support the work of our campus-based club, United Students (US).The Academic Advisor will work with core youth members, specifically, with young men of color and their families to ensure that students are on track to graduate from high school and are eligible for college. In addition, the Advisor will also be responsible for developing relationships with college representatives, school faculty and school administration. US is based in the following eastside high schools: Garfield, Lincoln, Mendez, Roosevelt, Torres, and Wilson.


The Advisor is responsible for contributing to the following:

●    Ensure that 100% of youth members graduate from high school

●    Ensure 95% of youth members go onto college

●    Support a base of about 60 student leaders

●    Build a college-going culture among core youth members

The Advisor is responsible for leading the following efforts:

●    By December 2019, ensure that 100% of Eastside boys and young men of color who receive academic services for 2 years graduate from high school and that at minimum 85% enroll in 4 year universities or colleges.

●    Provide academic support and advising for core youth members, specifically young men of color

●    Develop relationships and maintain communication with students’ parents, school faculty, and administrators

●    Create a college-going culture among youth members and families through college preparatory programs, one-on-one academic advisement, group advisement, and disseminating academic resources

●    Maintain accurate tracking tools and systems for case management and grant reporting

●    Work with other US staff to effectively retain and support core youth members holistically, specifically young men of color

●    Other duties and tasks as identified by the Academic Services Coordinator

InnerCity Struggle is seeking a person who meets the following qualifications:

●    College graduate who holds, at minimum, a Bachelor’s degree

●    Minimum 2 years experience providing youth development and academic support for diverse youth populations across identities and learning abilities

●    The ability to work in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment

●    Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills

●    Excellent organizational skills (with attention to detail)

●    Ability to work in a team setting and provide/receive constructive feedback

●    Demonstrated ability to work effectively with various stakeholders

●    Ability to work weekends as needed or required by the Academic Services Coordinator

●    Knowledgeable in Microsoft Office (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

●    Bilingual in Spanish

●    CA driver’s license and access to a reliable automobile (with at minimum, liability insurance)
