THE ORGANIZATION

The mission of the Paul M. Angell Family Foundation is to advance society through the conservation of the world’s oceans, the performing arts, enhancement of educational opportunity, and the prevention and alleviation of poverty. The Foundation’s conservation grantmaking focuses primarily on the protection of the world’s oceans and species. Priorities include:

•  Supporting the creation of effective Marine Protected Areas

•  Encouraging sustainable fisheries management

•  Eliminating illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing

•  Conserving the world’s shark and ray species

•  Limiting plastics pollution and other ocean debris

•  Preserving coral species and ecosystems

THE ROLE

This is a new position, and the successful candidate will help shape and grow the conservation work of the Foundation. The Senior Program Officer–Ocean Conservation will report to the Foundation’s Managing Director and serve as a staff team member. The person filling this role will work closely with the board member overseeing the conservation work of the Foundation. This is a full-time position, remotely working from any US location. The Foundation is headquartered in Chicago.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Shaping programs

•  Identify and evaluate new strategic opportunities to further the Foundation’s conservation goals

and design initiatives to take advantage of those opportunities

•  Partner with the board and staff to plan the strategic direction and growth of the Foundation

Grants Management

•  Respond in a timely and respectful manner to inquiries from grantees and applicants

•  Evaluate applications for funding. Conduct site visits, meet with current and prospective applicants

•  Attend and participate in board meetings and partner with the Managing Director and staff on agenda items and materials

•  Provide the board with thoughtful, well-reasoned funding recommendations and compelling high-quality written documents

•  Manage a portfolio of grants. Monitor and provide support to grantees to meet their goals and objectives

•  Work with the Senior Operations & Grants Administrator to ensure that grants data is accurate.

External Relations

•  Develop and deepen relationships with leaders and experts in the field, grantees, other ocean philanthropies, government officials and public agencies, policymakers, and other key stakeholders

•  Represent the Foundation in funder collaboratives and at conferences, seminars, and official forums

•  Convene meetings with grantees and encourage collaborations with leaders in conservation.

Other

•  Attend and actively participate in staff and planning meetings

•  Develop the conservation content on the website

•  Participate in educational opportunities, professional networks, and conferences

•  Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

•  This is full-time, remote from any US location. Evening and weekend work is occasionally required

•  Travel in the US approximately once a month for several days. Occasional international travel

•  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear and use hands to operate equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, scanners, filing cabinets

Qualifications

•  A minimum of ten years of experience in ocean conservation in government, philanthropy, or an advocacy organization. Significant experience with an advocacy organization is strongly desired

•  Expertise in one or more of the Foundation’s six conservation priority areas

•  Experience in program design, strategy development, and program evaluation

•  Professional presence and gravitas to capably represent the Foundation and uphold its reputation

•  Creative, energetic, and optimistic approach to work, including the ability to act strategically

•  Transparent and active collaborative partner with board members, staff, grantees, and other stakeholders. Ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies, personalities, and viewpoints

•  Excellent writing and analytic skills, including the ability to assess and synthesize complex information and briefly summarize the essence of issues and means to address them

•  Excellent project management skills and a capacity to meet deadlines. Keen attention to detail

•  Ability to move effectively between big picture and meticulous work required by the position

•  Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office platforms (Word, PowerPoint, Excel); familiarity and willingness to learn grant-making software is required.
