Position:​ After School Program Manager at Riverton

Compensation:​ $22/hr

Type: ​Full-time, non-exempt

Start Date: ​June 22, 2021

Schedule: ​Hours are 10 am - 6 pm; Workdays are Tuesday-Saturday in June through August; Monday-Friday for the rest of the year 

About Us: ​Harlem Grown’s mission is to inspire youth to lead healthy and ambitious lives through mentorship and hands-on education in urban farming, sustainability, and nutrition. 

Our Farms & Facilities: ​Harlem Grown operates four soil-based urban farms/gardens, four school gardens, and two hydroponic greenhouses. Our offices and properties are located between 127 and 151 Streets in Harlem, Manhattan. 

Our Programs:​ Harlem Grown provides youth and community development programs focused on urban farming, wellness, and sustainability. Our youth-focused programs include intensive school partnerships, educational farm tours, and summer camp. Our community development programs include wellness workshops, special events, commercial and community food scrap collection for composting, and fresh farm produce distribution to participants, volunteers, and neighborhood residents. 

Job Overview: ​This position plans and oversees Harlem Grown’s after-school program at Riverton Square, a residential complex in Harlem, and is the primary staff member on-site for this program. In leading the after-school program, this position will develop and lead hands-on lessons for grades 1 through 8 that meet Harlem Grown’s learning objectives. Activities may include cooking lessons, gardening, arts and crafts, and homework help. This position will also be responsible for helping to maintain the on-site, community garden and engaging youth participants in garden tasks. In the summer this position assists with Harlem Grown’s Saturday program and provides assistance and coverage as needed for any other public programs and programming projects.  This position requires a passionate commitment to Harlem Grown’s mission and to working with youth, as well as knowledge of nutrition, cooking and gardening/farming. 


● Work closely with the Program Director and other HG staff to manage and implement Harlem Grown’s after-school program, including leading hands-on farm education,cooking classes, and other educational activities

 ● Plan, manage, and run all aspects of Harlem Grown’s after school program at Riverton Square, including hiring and directing support staff, writing and delivering age-appropriate curricula, creating schedules and program themes, supervising all children enrolled in the program, working with program families, and ordering supplies

● Assist in coordinating community and family events, as well as marketing/outreach efforts, which may include tabling, open houses, and promotional events

● Ensure that the after school program is in line with Harlem Grown’s mission and goals and aligns with all other public programs, and communicate closely with the Program Director to work towards these ends

● Serve as support staff for Harlem Grown’s Saturday program in the summer

● Provide coverage and assistance for Harlem Grown’s other public programs and projects as needed, including farm tours and public events

● Serve as a role model for youth and reinforce Harlem Grown’s values of honesty, respect, and responsibility

● Perform other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by Harlem Grown and the Program Director


● Demonstrated experience in education, public programming and/or youth development, with

effective classroom management skills

● Particular experience in managing after school programs

● Demonstrated experience in writing curricula, especially for after school settings

● Experience in supervising part-time staff in youth work programming

● Strong communication and public presentation skills in the context of working with children

● Degree in education, youth work, or a related field a plus but not required

● Must be high-energy and enthusiastic in working with children and families

● Very strong organizational, planning, and leadership skills, with the ability to work independently

● Proficiency in computer skills

● Knowledge of food systems, agriculture, nutrition, urban farming and/or gardening a plus

● Spanish language fluency a plus
