ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

The Black Teacher Collaborative believes in the genius and beauty of Black children and the unique role of Black Teachers in cultivating their gifts. The Black Teacher Collaborative (BTC) seeks to ensure that all Black children will have challenging, affirming, and innovative learning environments staffed by a critical mass of Black educators who are equipped to maximize their shared racial identity to push students’ academic growth, sociopolitical consciousness, and socio-emotional well-being.

Black Teacher Collaborative seeks to transform the educational experience for Black students by creating an innovative, job-embedded professional learning experience for Black educators that serve as sacred learning spaces. BTC Staff will facilitate high-quality, practice-based, teaching & learning opportunities for Black educators that will allow them to tap into their full potential as exceptional Black teachers of Black students. The BTC experience supports Black educators by creating a learning experience that builds the mindsets, knowledge and skills needed to actualize their effectiveness and impact in racially congruent learning environments; with the ultimate goal of the advancement of Black children, our families, and our communities.


THE BTC EXPERIENCE

BTC’s current programmatic scope focuses on improving teacher impact utilizing the Black Liberatory Pedagogy (BLP). BTC has developed an innovative pedagogy, professional development curriculum and a cohort experience for Black teachers who are teaching Black students in a majority Black school. BTC will deepen the 2-year Professional Development experience with the Fannie C. Williams school in New Orleans, Louisiana in the 2021-2022 school year. CANDIDATE PROFILE

We are seeking candidates who believe deeply in BTC’s mission, who demonstrate intellectual curiosity, a growth mindset, persistence and grit in challenging situations and thrive in an innovative, self-driven and dynamic virtual work environment. The candidate should demonstrate the knowledge and skills required for the role along with a record of achievement. 

Successful candidates for the BTC Instructional Coach position will have a proven record of academic success working with Black students in BTC pedagogy as well as a record of success providing support to teachers that leads to immediate improvement. The BTC Instructional Coach will be able to work independently and support teachers in both virtual and in-person learning environments in New Orleans while demonstrating high expectations for both Black students and Black teachers. They will also have strong organizational, communication, time and project management skills.        


POSITION SUMMARY

The BTC Instructional Coach is an integral member of the Program and Innovation Team whose work will ensure that educators are well equipped to increase student achievement within our framework.   

The goal of BTC’s program is to ensure every BTC teacher is supported and prepared to achieve immediate, measurable academic growth with their students. The Instructional coach will work closely with all program participants and stakeholders at the Fannie C. Williams school to have an exceptional and dynamic experience. 

BTC’s training approach focuses on four prioritized elements per year that we believe are essential to the educators success in the program. Throughout the school year, The BTC Instructional Coach will support teachers via goal-driven individualized learning experiences that are aligned to the four prioritized elements. BTC teachers must demonstrate proficiency in these competencies in order to complete the training experience to maximize the benefit of BTC pedagogical framework. The BTC Instructional Coach will develop and lead the professional development and ensure alignment between training sessions and coaching sessions. 


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The BTC Instructional Coach is an experienced and successful teacher and coach who will play the most significant role in developing educators’ teaching skills by supporting the teachers at the Fannie C. Williams school towards proficiency in the prioritized BTC elements throughout the year. The Instructional Coach responsibilities will include 50% coaching teachers and the other 50% will be finalized based on the year long strategic planning process. The responsibilities of the Instructional Coach include, but is not limited to:

Actively develop educators toward proficiency of the four critical elements by:

  • Planning and executing virtual and/or in-person coaching experiences for each teacher at least twice per month
  • Observing and providing specific, actionable, on-the-spot feedback to individual teachers on their teaching performance throughout the year
  • Using Learning Management System (LMS) to engage with teachers online and provide additional resources that extend the learning from coaching sessions
  • Ensuring alignment of small-group and individual learning experiences which support educators’ acquisition of prioritized knowledge and skills
  • Developing and facilitating the Professional Development training sessions
  • Deeply internalizing the BTC Pedagogy and aligned instructional techniques 
  • Evaluating and tracking teachers’ performance by (1) accurately assessing teachers’ proficiency in the core skills in order to identify the highest priority development areas and (2) using data to identify trends in performance for individuals and group and set specific goals
  • Keeping accurate records of teachers’ performance in BTCs program data systems

Establish a culture grounded in Black Liberatory Education principles that equip teachers to cultivate student’s genius, power and beauty by: 

  • Coaching, and motivating a group of teachers to reach ambitious goals with Black students 
  • Promoting analytical self-reflection and goal setting in teachers in order to accelerate growth and student achievement

Contribute to the Program and Innovation team by:

  • Implementing interventions and support structures to ensure all teachers improve their teaching practice
  • Collaborate with the BTC Design team to inform training needs for teachers based on ongoing one-on-one sessions 
  • Create a midyear and end of year report of recommendations for the program design and implementation

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum three years of successful teaching experience with proven results
  • Minimum three years of successful instructional coaching experience
  • Bachelor's degree required; Master degree strongly preferred
  • Experience observing and providing direct feedback to teachers, both written and verbal, that leads to immediate improvement
  • Ability to use Learning Management System (LMS) to communicate additional resources, evaluation or tools to BTC educators
  • Strong analytical skills, including the ability to utilize quantitative and qualitative analysis to inform decision-making and set ambitious goals for BTC educators
  • Ability to utilize data to make recommendations for the iterative design of the program process. 
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate and inspire Black students and adult learners
  • Demonstrated ability to connect with adult learners quickly and to build strong working and mentoring relationships
  • Demonstrate a growth mindset and a desire to continually improve through feedback and coaching. 
  • Demonstrated ability to balance multiple priorities while maintaining a positive outlook and flexibility in a high-impact, fast-paced environment
  • Exceptional skills in time management and project management
  • Evidence of working successfully in teams or cooperative settings
  • Some experience using virtual platforms to facilitate engaging live sessions for adults
  • Required travel to regional, organization-wide meetings at least 4 times per year
