Position Summary

Freedom House is seeking a motivated self-starter to help produce our innovative assessment of internet and digital media freedom, Freedom on the Net. The Research Analyst will play a key role in research, editing, analysis, and project coordination for the annual publication. Freedom on the Net works with over 70 field contributors from around the world who write reports on various aspects of internet freedom, such as online censorship, surveillance, laws impacting free speech online, extralegal harassment of bloggers, use of circumvention tools, and other topics identified in our methodology. The Research Analyst will work with field contributors and other members of the Freedom on the Net team to ensure that all reports adhere to the highest standards of quality and analytical integrity. Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, international relations, communications, or related field; Master’s degree or other advanced degree is strongly preferred
  • Minimum 2 – 4 years of directly related experience or equivalent combination of advanced education and experience
  • Outstanding editing skills and a knack for writing concise, eloquent communications
  • Intellectual curiosity for the political, legal, and human rights debates surrounding the internet
  • Strong knowledge of online censorship, surveillance, laws impacting free speech online, and other subjects covered in the report
  • Superb attention to detail and an ability to produce error-free work on tight deadlines
  • Fluency in using MS Word to mark up and reformat documents, and Excel to create spreadsheets that are smart and neat
  • Ability to work with limited supervision, finding solutions to problems as they arise and taking responsibility for your work


Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity and interest in the political dynamics and internet freedom developments of China, Russia, and their surrounding regions
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, a sense of humor, and an ability to facilitate cooperation between people with divergent views and from different cultural backgrounds
  • Some experience with donor reporting, monitoring & evaluation, and financial reconciliations.


Some duties and responsibilities

  • Perform substantive editing, copyediting, and fact-checking of reports on internet freedom authored by non-native English speakers. In the process of editing, supplement the reports with own research
  • Develop regional and thematic expertise within Freedom House, contribute analysis to the Freedom on the Net report, provide substantive input at internal and external meetings, conduct media interviews, and draft talking points for senior staff
  • Act as primary point of contact with external consultants based around the world, liaising by secure means when necessary
  • Develop a network of regional and thematic experts to serve as new contributors
  • Track internet freedom-related developments in your assigned region
  • Prepare articles, charts, graphics, and other support materials for publication
  • Help with logistical preparations for domestic and international events
  • Assist with funding proposals, donor reports, and monitoring and evaluation of the project’s impact
  • Produce consultant contracts, process payment requests, and prepare business expense reports and other financial documents in line with Freedom House requirements
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
