NACDL's Fourth Amendment Center: Education and Research Associate

The National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) is the preeminent organization advancing the mission of the criminal defense bar to ensure justice and due process for persons accused of crime or wrongdoing. A professional bar association founded in 1958, NACDL's many thousands of direct members in 28 countries – and 90 state, provincial and local affiliate organizations totaling up to 40,000 attorneys – include private criminal defense lawyers, public defenders, military defense counsel, law professors and judges committed to preserving fairness and promoting a rational and humane criminal justice system.


The National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) is seeking an Education and Research Associate to support the Association’s Fourth Amendment Center. This individual will be responsible for assisting in the drafting, editing and strategic dissemination of various reports and educational pieces, maintaining a case database and updating web pages, and planning and executing webinars, meetings and trainings.  

This will be an exciting opportunity to work on cutting edge legal issues that advance the association’s mission nationally and internationally, focusing on the intersection of surveillance programs and technologies and the Fourth Amendment.

Responsibilities include:

  • Provide administrative support and assistance to NACDL's Fourth Amendment Center Director in building the Fourth Amendment Center’s programming and resources.
  • Assist the Sr. Litigation Counsel and Staff Attorney in research and resource collection.
  • Edit and finalize reports, educational pieces and other NACDL documents.
  • Build and maintain ongoing relationships with key legal partners, members and advisory committees.
  • Research emerging surveillance technologies and programs, build and maintain member resources and populate the Fourth Amendment Center website with current information.
  • Coordinate logistics for webinars, training calls and in person meetings to facilitate the work of the Fourth Amendment Center.

Requirements

Qualified candidates will possess an undergraduate degree with an interest in criminal law and policy. The ideal candidate will share NACDL’s commitment to its mission. Excellent research skills (traditional and online) as well as superior oral and written communications skills are a must. The candidate should also be comfortable working in a team-oriented environment.

Additionally, the ideal candidate will:

  • Be detail-oriented.
  • Have a working understanding of technology and surveillance concerns as they relate to the criminal justice system.
  • Demonstrate a strong work ethic and sound professional judgment.
  • Be adept at managing competing priorities and responding to time-sensitive requests.
  • Be articulate and able to work well with NACDL’s leaders, members, staff, and allies.
  • Have strong Microsoft Office skills and a willingness to learn software and applications, including NACDL’s website software.
  • Be able to travel domestically on an occasional basis.

​Due to COVID-19 all NACDL employees are currently working remotely, when it is deemed safe to return to in-person work this position ​will be based at NACDL’s Washington, D.C. office, conveniently located near downtown Metro stops.
