DESCRIPTION:

Partnership for the Advancement and Immersion of Refugees (PAIR) empowers refugee youth to navigate American society, reach their academic potential and become community leaders through educational mentoring programs. PAIR works with newcomers from shortly after their arrival in the United States, through high school graduation and beyond. This position is part of the Global Scholars College Access Program.

The Program Coordinator (PC) collaborates with PAIR staff and volunteer mentors to plan, implement, and evaluate an educational program for refugee youth ages 16-20. The goal of the program is to increase refugee student graduation rates and participation in higher education. The PC works directly with students, students’ families, volunteer mentors, and school administrators to meet the goals of the program.

This position is suitable for those with practical experience working directly with at-risk youth, conducting grassroots outreach to participants in schools and apartment complexes, implementing educational programming, working with community volunteers, and providing case management and/or college access services to diverse populations.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

PAIR’s Global Scholars is a community-based mentoring and case management program for 11th and 12th grade refugee students in the greater Houston area. Students in this program are assigned an adult mentor and work with PAIR’s program staff to receive individualized support in the students’ pursuit of high school graduation, career exploration, and preparation for post-secondary education.

This is a year-round position, starting August 1, 2020. Paid, part time training may be available before August 1, 2020.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

●     Recruit and enroll refugee youth in the mentoring program: educate students and parents; conduct home visits and attend after-school programs to establish and maintain relationships with students

●     Manage a caseload of 15-20 students: provide information and individualized support to students and their mentors to complete graduation requirements, as well as college admissions, financial aid, and scholarship processes

●     Document activity and record progress in case notes; collect student data and surveys and enter in appropriate databases

●     Support Volunteer Coordinator in the recruitment and screening of new volunteer mentors; review volunteer applications and make match decisions

●     Schedule and facilitate mentor and student introductory, check-in, and closure meetings

●     Supervise and coach volunteers to be effective mentors

●     Manage school and community partnerships to ensure students maximize academic tutoring, college counseling, and other available supports

●     Ensure stewardship of PAIR’s Scholarship Fund, including tracking donor investments, student awards, and distribution for qualifying educational expenses on behalf of Global Scholars’ students and alumni

●     Work with team to organize group events, including student workshops, college visits, community service activities, field trips, celebrations and mentor meetings

●     Develop and translate recruitment and other program materials for students, parents and volunteers; contribute curriculum content and resources

●     Provide program input and feedback; report successes and inform PD of opportunities to promote the program

●     Perform general administrative duties as assigned


QUALIFICATIONS:

●     Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university

●     Experience and a strong interest in working with refugees and/or youth

●     Academic or work experience in education, international studies, social work, or similar fields preferred

●     Experience with public school systems, in student counseling, teaching, or college admissions strongly preferred

●     Commitment to working in a culturally-competent manner with diverse populations, including those with language, religious, and cultural differences

●     Strong writing ability and communication skills

●     Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets, and databases; experience with Salesforce or other CRM a plus

●     Must have own vehicle and maintain a valid driver’s license and personal automobile insurance; must be willing to travel to school and community sites, and transport students when needed. Candidates will be required to undergo a background check

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Student and mentor meetings and events may take place in the evenings and on weekends. Flexibility and adaptability to program needs and schedule are required. The position involves time in the PAIR office and frequent travel to school sites, students’ homes, and student appointments. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic about grassroots fieldwork and comfortable visiting refugee families in their apartments in Southwest Houston.
