Founded in 2013, a strategy triad guides our work and includes: a state-of-the-art research institute where we conduct marine research powered by genomics; the Gloucester Biotechnology Academy (Academy), a hands-on vocational program which trains young adults to become biotech and biomanufacturing lab technicians; and our science community, expanding the local economy as we build a vibrant science hub on Cape Ann. GMGI is in a high-growth mode with a fantastic team ready to lead the organization into its next chapter.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Finance and Administration is a part of the senior leadership team and collaborates with our active Board of Directors. The successful candidate will be a hands-on manager leading the organization’s finance, accounting, budgeting, human resources, and other administrative areas. The Director of Finance plays a critical role as GMGI continues to enhance its quality program, build capacity and achieve ambitious goals. This is a tremendous opportunity for a finance and operations leader to maximize and strengthen the internal capacity of a rapidly growing, high-impact organization.

Essential Areas of Responsibility

Financial Management

·       Update, implement, and ensure effective internal controls and procedures.

·       Provide accurate and timely monthly financial reports and analysis for the internal management team and Board of Directors. 

-       Communicate, collaborate and present effectively critical financial matters to GMGI’s Board of Directors, participating in bi-monthly Board meetings and committee/subcommittee meetings as needed.

-       Lead periodic Audit, Finance and Risk Committee meetings of the Board together with the Committee Chair.

·       Manage the Accounting and Operations Associate, and related workflow including cash receipts, disbursements, payroll, monthly closings, and other general accounting functions.

·       Manage and implement yearly and ongoing budgeting process in conjunction with the Executive Director, including monthly review and monitoring. Provide finance support for new program development activities.

-       Manage organizational cash flow and forecasting.

·       Ensure a clean annual audit process and tax return preparation. 

-       Ensure ongoing compliance with the Academy’s annual financial reporting requirements for state licensing.

·       Update, implement, and ensure effective internal controls and procedures.

·       Manage the research grant contract management and financial management systems, ensuring adequate external reporting to granting agencies and effective internal reporting and cost management.

·       Lead the Academy’s Financial Aid Committee and continue to manage and improve systems and procedures for invoicing and collecting education program tuition.

Human Resources, Technology & Administration

·       Manage and continue to develop, with Executive Director, GMGI’s human resources and administration functions including overseeing benefits administration, diversity, equity and inclusion, recruiting and professional development.

·       Oversee and ensure maximum efficiency of GMGI’s risk management and insurance programs.

·       Coordinate with IT vendor and oversee organization’s IT needs.

·       Lead administrative functions including facilities management to ensure efficient and consistent operations as the organization scales.

Qualifications

·       A Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business is required, and an MBA/CPA or related degree is highly beneficial.

·       7-10 years of professional experience with broad financial and operations management experience.

·       Work in a non-profit setting is valued with expertise in non-profit accounting and budgeting.

·       Strong analytical skills, leadership and management with a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, motivate and collaborate with others.

·       Ability to design, create and implement operational systems, policies and procedures.

·       Technology savvy with knowledge of accounting and reporting software.

·       Highly self-motivated, team player with positive attitude and sense of humor.

Work Environment and Other Requirements

The Director of Finance and Administration is based at GMGI headquarters located in the heart of the historic harbor, at 417 Main Street, Gloucester, MA, and has one direct report. Flexible, remote work can be accommodated. A generous benefits package is provided and salary is commensurate with experience and other qualifications.
