OVERVIEW

The ACLU’s Product Development team is looking for a Front-End Engineer to help lead our newly launched effort to create public-facing products in support of the organization’s mission. The Front-End Engineer will report to the Head of Product Development, and will play an important role in shaping this team’s process and approach,

Product Development is a multidisciplinary team working with stakeholder groups in communications, advocacy, grassroots organizing, fundraising, and within the broader Product & Technology department. Its goal is to l introduce entirely new interactive tools and experiences, as well as improve the user experience of existing systems.

The team works in close collaboration with its stakeholders, to brainstorm, roadmap, build, and refine web and mobile software products intended to both educate constituents about their rights, and provide direct opportunities for meaningful political action.

 

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

·        Evaluate and select client-side tools and frameworks for web-based applications

·        Establish a workflow for designing, writing, reviewing, testing, and deploying front-end systems that promotes intra- and inter-team communication and enables reusability, flexibility, and frequent iteration

·        Work with visual and UX designers to create and maintain a style guide and library of page layouts, UI components, and interaction patterns that supports long-running apps, but can also be quickly remixed in response to current events

·        Work with stakeholders to tease out goals and product requirements through a user-centric mindset, proposing alternate and multi-step solutions, and balancing development speed and scope

·        Provide an informed viewpoint on development discussions and decisions, while remaining open-minded to new technologies and approaches

·        Serve as a lead on some projects and an individual contributor on others; d play multiple roles where needed, contribute to product and design thinking, and project management

·        Collaborate with engineers across the Product & Technology department to integrate with existing content management and data systems

·        Mentor and educating members inside and outside of the team to improve understanding of front-end technology specifically and product-driven development generally

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

·        3+ years of experience with complex web applications in a production environment

·        Strong DOM, CSS and JavaScript fundamentals, as well as a mix of experience with client frameworks (React, Vue.js, etc.), build tools (e.g. Webpack, Browserify), testing (e.g. Karma, Tape), and integration/deployment services (CircleCI, Netlify, AWS, etc.)

·        A responsive design mindset that balances mobile-first and desktop development tradeoffs depending on use case, along with a commitment to web accessibility

·        Experience with UI, data visualization, charting, and mapping libraries such as Material UI, D3 and Leaflet

·        Experience working with, massaging and integrating data of varying formats and quality, including API integrations, SQL, CSV/JSON processing on the command-line, geospatial data, and semi-structured sources like web scraping

·        Using A/B testing, feature flagging, and other forms of incremental rollout to measure changes in user behavior and system metrics

·        Familiarity with modern (ES2015+) JavaScript, and interest in forward-looking technologies such as the Push API, Service Workers, and Web Components

·        Enthusiasm for building open source software, including engaging with a wider community of civic technologists, and an “open by default” mindset

·        Ideally comfortable with (and/or interested in learning) additional languages such as Python or Ruby, server-side application frameworks such as Node.js/Express, Flask, or Rails, and reading and contributing to back-end application code when needed
