Position Summary:

Started in 1992, Asian Family Support Services of Austin (formerly SAHELI) is a non-profit

organization that helps and empowers Asian survivors of domestic violence, sexual violence and

trafficking. We work to improve client access to services and increase community awareness of

various forms of gender-based violence and oppression. Our mission is to promote abuse-free Asian

communities through advocacy, support, awareness and access to social services.

AFSSA is committed to providing the highest quality, client centered and strength based services.

The Therapeutic Counselor will be responsible for providing culturally-grounded and traumainformed

ongoing therapeutic counseling services for Asian and immigrant survivors of domestic

violence, sexual violence and sex trafficking. Holistic services provided will consider cultural,

language and religious dynamics that are traditional barriers to the Asian and immigrant

community in fully utilizing available community resources to ensure safety and well-being.

This position will directly report to the Client Services Program Director.

Essential Job Functions:

• Provide culturally-grounded holistic short and long-term counseling with survivors of

domestic and sexual violence presenting with a wide range of mental health and/or

psychosocial disorders with individuals, families and groups utilizing various

psychotherapeutic modalities

• Develop comprehensive and culturally-grounded service plans and diagnostic assessments

in accordance with evidence/best practice, professional ethics and boundaries in

partnership with the client to establish individualized goals and interventions

• Maintain counseling case documentation in accordance with all applicable agency, state and

federal policies, laws, and instructions

• Maintain a caseload of ongoing and active clients as agreed upon with Client Services

Program Director

• Participate in Austin area coalitions and task forces to build alliances and partnerships with

community based organizations to increase access to support services for clients

• Assist with the agency hotline and provide support, safety planning and other crisis related

services during and outside of office hours

• Collaborate with AFSSA Direct Service staff as well as other treatment providers to address

myriad of client needs

• Incorporate the use of trained Direct Service volunteers into direct or support work with


• Attend various agency meetings as required including team, agency and clinical supervision

meetings as required

• Adhere to all agency, state and federal policies and regulations

• Perform other duties as assigned

Required knowledge, abilities, and skills:

• Licensed by the state of Texas to provide mental/behavioral health including Licensed

Master Social Worker (LMSW), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) Licensed

Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)

• Minimum 2-4 years of professional post-graduate culturally grounded clinical experience

providing therapeutic services to traditionally underserved populations

• Experience providing mental health services to adults, adolescents and children utilizing

various modalities

• Experience in trauma-informed service provision

• Knowledge of mental health classifications/DSM-V

• Knowledge of standard documentation requirements for clinical services

• Knowledge of Asian cultures, respect for all cultures, and ability to interact with diverse


• Knowledge of gender-based violence issues and their impact on individuals and families

and/or experience working with individuals who have experienced trauma

• Strong familiarity with one or more Asian languages

• Knowledge and proficiency in the use of computers, internet searches, smartphone devices

and other software packages

• Must be willing to be on call evenings and weekends for periodic hotline availability

• Must submit to and successfully complete a background investigation

• Ability to continuously expand knowledge base through continuing education of innovative

clinical techniques and research

• Ability to maintain effective relationships with staff, volunteers, community and national


• Ability to work effectively with diverse group of stakeholders

• Ability to maintain flexible schedule in accordance with program needs


• Valid U.S. work permit
