The Community Programs provide comprehensive services, including assessment and case management, counseling, advocacy, referrals, information workshops and support groups, to individuals and families impacted by violence including domestic violence, rape and sexual assault, and homicide. Located in the communities we serve, Safe Horizon partners with local agencies to provide care to meet the myriad of needs related victims of violence. Safe Horizon Community Programs are located throughout New York City.

 Essential Job Functions:

  • Short term counseling, crisis intervention and case management services to victims of crime, including victims of domestic violence and sexual assault;
  • Conducting intake and assessment for individuals seeking assistance;
  • Providing advocacy to victims of crime on obtaining orders of protection, Office of Victim Services Compensation lock replacement and emergency housing transfers for NYCHA residents;
  • Advocating for clients for public entitlements with systems and other agencies, where necessary;
  • Performing safety assessment and risk management;
  • Providing information and referrals for services such as medical/hospital-related, shelters, long-term counseling, public assistance and other entitlements;
  • Providing emergency practical assistance including transportation, food vouchers, financial assistance and emergency cell phones;
  • Co-facilitating support groups;
  • Conducting educational presentations and community outreach on domestic violence, sexual assault and other related topics;
  • Reviewing and revising curriculums as needed for these outreach efforts;
  • Participating in staff meetings, relevant trainings and seminars;
  • Performing data entry into a computerized record keeping system and maintaining thorough and accurate case records and statistics;
  • Preparing monthly and quarterly statistical reports;
  • Performing various other duties as determined by the supervisor.

  • Secondary Job Functions:
  • Assisting with administrative functions, including front desk coverage, maintenance of files and logs;
  • Various other duties as requested.

Knowledge and Skills: 


  • A Bachelor’s degree in social work or one of the other human service, or equivalent experience and training .
  • Experience working with survivors of domestic violence and other victims of crime desired;
  • A minimum of two years of direct service experience in a social service setting or one year of direct service at Safe Horizon. 
  • Bilingual in Spanish required
  • Ability to generate own tasks and develop creative solutions to problems;
  • Sensitivity towards and understanding of victimization, especially the experience of survivors of domestic violence and sexual violence;
  • Strong communication and organizational skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work under pressure in a calm and reassuring manner;
