Groundswell brings together artists, youth, and community organizations to use art as a tool for social change. Each Groundswell project follows a transformative process, guided by youth, artists, and community partners.


Groundswell is looking to expand our roster of School Based Teaching Artists to lead a variety of arts-based programs including after-school mural projects and in-school multi-media arts residencies.  Applicants should possess dynamic facilitation skills, a commitment to anti-oppressive pedagogy, and experience with youth-centered, research-based arts education. 


Job Description: 

  • Develop and implement youth-centered curricula connected to Social Justice, Youth Development, and Artistic Communication skills 
  • Create developmentally-aligned project workplans that reflect input from Community Partner/School 
  • Teach discrete visual art skills such as visual literacy, color theory, and painting techniques and help youth synthesize these skills towards project goals 
  • Raise youth awareness of historical and contemporary connections between the arts and social justice 
  • Support youth in their ability to use art as a tool to envision, communicate and influence change in their communities 

 

Qualifications: 

  • BA or equivalent experience preferred. Minimum 2 years teaching experience (or related experience) 
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills 
  • Excellent group facilitation, research, and public speaking skills 
  • Mastery of Visual Arts discipline (mural arts, digital photo-video/illustration, printmaking/ fine arts) 
  • Experience with community organizing, team building, community engagement 

Must have flexible work schedule. Groundswell Teaching Artists work on a contractual/freelance basis. The majority of School Based Programs take place M-F between 9am & 5pm
