About Us: Row New York is a unique sports-based non-profit organization founded on the premise that the discipline and teamwork that rowing instills, when combined with rigorous academic support, has the power to change lives. We have two main programs: Our Youth Program serves over 250 middle and high school student-athletes from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. It is a high dosage, year-round rowing and academic program with a goal of ensuring that 100% of our young people graduate high school and matriculate to college. In addition, we offer rowing to over 2,000 New Yorkers of all ages who are either people with physical or cognitive disabilities, military veterans, or local community members. Lastly, Row New York offers a fee-for-service rowing program for New York City independent high schools. Our programs are offered at program sites across three boroughs: Upper Manhattan, Flushing Meadows Corona Park, and Canarsie, Brooklyn.


Position Summary: Row New York is seeking a dynamic, intelligent and committed Academic and College Success Program Manager to work closely with our student athletes, implementing Row New York’s academic support program to students enrolled in the Manhattan Youth Rowing program. The Academic and College Success Program Manager will facilitate daily academic programming for our middle school and high school student athletes primarily at our Washington Heights/Inwood site, although currently working remotely. In this role, the candidate will develop strong, healthy relationships with Row New York participants, collaborate with coaches and other program staff, and manage tutors (Youth Engagement Specialists) to deliver quality programming and support participants’ academic success and social-emotional growth. This position is full-time and eligible for Row New York’s excellent benefits package.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and facilitate successful academic programming to raise student achievement:
  • In collaboration with other program staff, plan for the academic year and summer sessions, which includes but is not limited to, staff training, curriculum selection, event planning, test preparation, and administering program assessments.
  • Design, prepare, and implement engaging lesson plans and lead workshops for students that are geared toward college preparation and the development of academic, social-emotional, and self-efficacy skills and competencies.
  • Collaborate with coaches to 1) tailor academic programs to fit athletes’ needs while maintaining the integrity and quality of the academic program, 2) plan and execute student specific interventions to support achievement for low performing students, and 3) debrief academic programming and receive feedback.
  • Manage student engagement and behavior during programming through positive reinforcement, high expectations, community building and norming; contribute to an inclusive team culture.
  • Develop strong, healthy relationships with all participants.
  • Supervise Youth Engagement Specialists by establishing clear expectations, effectively delegating tasks, establishing roles and responsibilities during academic programming, and providing constructive and regular feedback.
  • Facilitate open communication with students and families.
  • Build partnerships with local schools to foster a program/school connection.
  • Assist middle school students with the NYC high school application process. 
  • Participate in the timely collection of academic metrics.
  • Assist the Alumni and College Success Manager in managing caseload of graduating seniors for college counseling :
  • Track and support students’ college application process and post high school plans.
  • Coordinate with students, coaches, and the academic team to ensure every student is on track to achieve their college application goals or post secondary plans. 
  • Assist the Alumni and College Success Manager in planning and facilitating college preparation workshops.
  • Be a positive contributor to the Row New York Community:
  • Model character, leadership and organizational values.
  • Prioritize and ensure the safety of program participants.
  • Chaperone students during enrichment events, which include but are not limited high school fairs, college visits, and youth forums.
  • Assist with running organization-wide events as needed.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, preferably in education or other related field
  • At least two years’ related professional experience
  • Demonstrated interest in education and/or youth development
  • Experience working with youth, families, educators, administrators, or community leaders; significant volunteer work will be considered
  • Experience working with first-generation college bound students a plus
  • Strong work ethic coupled with an enthusiastic and passionate approach to work; willingness to ask questions and learn
  • Excellent communicator, both verbally and in writing; skilled at presenting to a group
  • Professional and warm demeanor
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Proactive problem-solver who demonstrates initiative
  • Equally productive working individually and with a team
  • Understanding of the New York City DOE high application process
  • Knowledge of the college access and success landscape in New York City
  • Proficient using business applications like Google Suite, Zoom, Salesforce, Excel, etc
  • Ability to work late afternoons and evenings during the school year and some weekends
  • Spanish fluency is highly desired
