Overview

As a key member of the executive team, the Director of Development will play a central role in raising the critical funds needed to support Lamp for Haiti's humanitarian and health care mission.  Operating out of the northern New Jersey region (which forms the Lamp's base of support), the candidate will serve as the primary fundraising professional working closely with the Executive Director, the organization's president and the Board of Directors, to ensure the agency's continued growth.

Preferred candidates will be self-motivated multi-taskers.  We are looking for big thinkers who are willing to roll up their sleeves within a small organization.

The Organization

The Lamp for Haiti is a US nonprofit whose primary activity is the operation of a health care center in Cité Soleil, a shantytown on the edge of the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince. Complementing this central activity are a number of programs that are designed to reduce the causes of illness, build community cohesion and respond to other critical needs of the community. The Lamp is, above all, a community organization. It utilizes an all-Haitian staff and works with the people of the area to build a responsive and durable community institution.

All of the Lamp's funding comes from individuals and small family foundations in the US. Due to the diligence of the previous Director of Development the Lamp has a well-established fundraising strategy and excellent donor relationships which the incoming staff member will be able to rely upon.  Key fundraising activities include a gala in Montclair, NJ, each October, a Spring Appeal, a newsletter, social media presence, and activities connected with year-end giving.  The agency also receives substantial donations in the form of medicine from a number of medical institutions. The Lamp for Haiti is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit; donations are fully tax deductible.

The Lamp does not have a physical office in the US; day to day activities will be conducted virtually, for the most part.

Primary Job Responsibilities

Fundraising

  • Development of a Strategic Fundraising Plan to achieve the goals and mission of Lamp.
  • Effective implementation of all aspects of the key fundraising activities – the Spring Appeal, the Fall Gala and End of Year Appeal.
  • Content production for all activities.
  • Event management, especially of the Fall Gala.  Gala activities include solicitation of event sponsorship, silent auction, raffle, paddle raiser, party production, and video content.  It is assumed that the Gala will again be virtual this year, so that management of content on the internet is a key responsibility.
  • Maintenance of the Lamp’s Customer Relationship Management system (Donor Perfect).
  • Building strong relationships with existing and prospective donors, both individual and institutional.
  • Coordinating an effective program for recognition, involvement and stewardship of major and special gifts donors.
  • Effective volunteer management.  The Gala and other events are typically implemented by a committee of local volunteers.
  • Support and oversight of donor-led fundraising events.
  • Identification of new growth opportunities and income streams.
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director, research potential corporate and foundation funding prospects while assisting in the development a variety of high quality grant applications, proposals and written materials.

Marketing

  • Maintenance of the website, with periodic content updates
  • Content creation for social media posts; growing social media following (FB, IG)
  • Sending periodic mass emails to support campaigns/appeals

Administrative

  • Administrative duties will include DonorPerfect data entry and analysis, issuing tax receipts to donors, and mail processing.

Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidate will have 3-5+ years of relevant work experience, preferably in nonprofit fundraising and development. The candidate must be able to work independently while developing appropriate reporting mechanisms with senior management and the agency's senior volunteer leadership. Specifically, candidates should show:

  • Strong overall development experience, with an understanding of fundraising best practice.
  • Excellent skills in written and verbal communications, attention to detail, judgment, and strong relationship-building and customer service skills.
  • A positive attitude, confidence, common sense, and good listening abilities
  • Skills to work with and motivate volunteers
  • Interest in and commitment to Lamp for Haiti's mission, goals and programs while effectively representing the agency with the highest professional standards.
  • Knowledge of donor database software, MS Office, internet tools.
  • Ability to travel – at least once to Haiti -- and occasionally work weekends and evenings.
  • A bachelor’s degree is preferred; familiarity with international development work is an asset.
