Our Vision & Mission

To end cruelty and restore respect for all animals throughout Asia.

Our mission is to end the farming of bears for bile in Vietnam and China, provide sanctuary for bears, end the suffering of wild animals in captivity and ensure humane treatment of cats and dogs.

Role Summary

The Director of Major Gifts will be responsible for identifying, qualifying, cultivating, and soliciting leadership donors to raise significant revenue for Animals Asia. Reporting to the Director of Development, this is a focused and crucial role in a small, ambitious team in which you will have ownership of the Major Donor program and income.

The Opportunity

Opportunity is precisely the right word. Fundraisers are not often presented with an urgent, tangible case for support, an organizational reputation for delivering impact, and a pipeline brimming with highly cultivated warm donors and qualified prospects, but that is waiting for you here. Our Development Manager is already in place leading a new and exciting mid-value program that is also identifying a steady stream of new High Net Worth Individual prospects to further assist your fundraising targets.

We have the ultimate program portfolio to work with. In 2017, Animals Asia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Vietnamese Government to end bear bile farming in the country once and for all. Since then, the Foundation has been working hard to create the road map to make that happen. This month, we are breaking ground on our second sanctuary in Vietnam, which will provide a forever home for every one of the country’s remaining bile bears. The sooner we can build it – the faster we can bring them home. We need you to help raise funds to build the sanctuary and rescue the bears.

Animals Asia is also leading the way in ending the elephant riding trade. Again in collaboration with the Vietnamese Government and a wide range of partners, we are on a mission to establish new, kinder, more sustainable methods of tourism to free the animals from lives of pain and suffering.

Donors love Animals Asia because we deliver on our promises and create transformational change for animals. Donors can watch in real-time as we rescue animals and transport them back to our world-class sanctuaries, or they can join webinars with our inspirational Founder Jill Robinson as she brings them up to date on how we are achieving sustainable and systemic change through our trademark collaborative approach with local communities and Governments. Our program team works seamlessly and collaboratively with our fundraisers – they are as enthusiastic about fundraising as we are about programs creating a fantastic ‘one team’ culture that really sets us apart.

We have invested significantly in our fundraising over the last two years, doubling our income and tripling our donor base in the US. You will work closely with our international colleagues bringing together exceptional talent from the UK, Europe, Australia, and Asia to develop exciting, data-led growth strategies. You will be supported with a range of first-class fundraising resources, including case for support development, profiling, screening, and insights reporting.

All of this, coupled with your experience and inherent drive and ambition, will set you up to exploit our potential and achieve amazing results for the Foundation, the donors, and most importantly, the animals.

Job Description

You will be responsible for developing and delivering the Major Gift strategy and growth in income from the Major Donor (MD) program across the US. You will work closely with the Executive Director and Director of Development, who will lead Trusts and Foundation giving, and the Development Manager, who is currently leading the mid-value program.

Your goal will be to increase the return from our Major Donor pool with a particular focus on increasing the number of six and seven-figure gifts, ideally through multi-year partnerships.

Strategy and budgeting

  • Using a data insight-led approach, create a major gift strategy that identifies and articulates the potential for growth, set out in an appropriately aggressive set of fundraising metrics.
  • Set out how to achieve the metrics through a detailed work plan with specific tactics and KPIs.
  • Create phased multi-year budgets and forecasts to meet short and long-term goals
  • Manage the Major Donor pipeline to ensure a constant balance of donors at various stages of the giving cycle, including new business opportunities each year.
  • Work closely with the Development Manager to ensure the mid-value program effectively creates acquisition opportunities for the MD program.

Prospecting and Research

  • Research, manage and develop existing and prospective donor profiles.
  • Qualify all existing donors and prospects using the Animals Asia qualification scoring system to manage and prioritize relationships.
  • Ensure our data is frequently and regularly mined for new prospects and that all leads coming up from the mid-value program are cultivated.

Donor Stewardship and Relationship Management

  • Manage a portfolio of current and prospective donors, ensuring each one has a stewardship journey tailored to their interests, consent preferences, and giving propensity.
  • Ensure our MD program is highly engaging, maximizing touch point opportunities through face-to-face meetings, phone calls, and other personalized communication methods.
  • Develop proposals and cases for support to secure single and multi-year gifts.
  • Lead on securing donations, involving /engaging / utilizing other stakeholders as required.
  • Negotiate and manage the creation and delivery of donor contracts and MOUs.
  • Ensure all donor reporting requirements are delivered on time, including taking the lead on financial reporting as required.
  • Keep donors highly engaged and motivated by delivering exceptional stewardship, including ‘surprise and delight’ moments. Combine personal touch points with the regular program of updates, stories, and impact reports.
  • Effectively and accurately utilize the organizational CRM (Blackbaud CRM database) to record, monitor, retrieve and report information, ensuring stewardship plans and interactions are up to date.
  • Provide support and briefings to the management team and the US Board, ensuring they are well prepared for all Major Donor activity. Work collaboratively with them to develop key relationships.

Other

  • Help drive and develop philanthropy learning and expertise in the Foundation.
  • Fully participate in staff training and performance and development appraisal process to assist in the achievement of Animals Asia's objectives and mission.
  • Ensure Animals Asia follows best practices in fundraising and maintains compliance with all relevant US fundraising regulations.

The Ideal Candidate

When you tell people you’re a fundraiser, you mean it’s who you are – not just what you do. It’s in your DNA. It’s in your blood. You love finding people who share our mission and providing them with the opportunity to make a difference. And you are so good at it that you have years of success smashing targets and growing income – because that kind of goal makes you thrive.

You are constantly looking for opportunities, and you can spot them where others can’t. They are in the data you review, the conversations you hold, and the projects you sell. You are one of life’s natural go-getters, full of drive and initiative, and have a can-do attitude – you know how to make things happen.

You are industrious and organized, so all your donors are kept up to date and highly engaged, and you love nothing more than the chance to check in with them over email, phone, or face to face.

You will be looking after donors across the US, and this will include meeting as often as possible so you will be happy and able to travel frequently and sometimes take international trips to our projects as required.

You’ll love the sound of this opportunity because you thrive on the chance to grow income, particularly when it means taking prospects all the way from identification to gifts. But you will also be excited because this is just the right cause for you. You have always been an animal lover and may already be working for an animal organization. You have been waiting for the chance to use your first-class fundraising skills to make a difference in a cause close to your heart.
