Job Overview

Community Lodgings is seeking a Volunteer/In-Kind Coordinator with primary responsibility for planning, organizing and directing the volunteer and In-Kind gift programs. This position is part of the Development team and these programs support fundraising, community building and increased awareness of the organizations' mission and programs. 

Areas of Responsibility

  • Responsible for recruiting and managing individual volunteers, corporate groups, school groups, and others from the community
  • Leverage individual’s strengths, interests and abilities of volunteers for appropriate placement
  • Maintain volunteer records and generate monthly reports
  • Train and inform staff how best to work with and supervise volunteers within their programs
  • Work with staff to define new volunteer opportunities and review current volunteer programs to remain relevant to staff and clients needs
  • Contribute and write content for monthly Volunteer and In-Kind newsletter and blog
  • Develop and maintain relationships with other volunteer organizations within the community
  • Identify community outreach opportunities such as fairs, festivals, local farmers markets and organizations
  • Host and attend recruiting events to attract volunteers within the area
  • Represent Community Lodgings at community outreach events, churches, speaking engagements and United Way/CFC campaign events
  •  Assist with updating and creating content for social media pages
  •  Act as primary supervisor of volunteers supporting fundraising events
  • Manage the entire life cycle of in-kind donations from solicitation, acceptance, distribution, documenting, to acknowledgment
  • Coordinate in-kind drives, including internal program communication and coordination (i.e. annual coat giveaway, holiday gift giving program, Thanksgiving baskets, day-to-day urgent needs, etc.)
  • Collaborate with Development Director and create a system to acknowledge and steward in-kind donors and volunteers
  • Conduct presentations and tours about Community Lodgings to interested groups or individuals.
  • Support Development Director with solicitation of in-kind goods for community events
  • Other duties as assigned


  • College degree desired and prior experience in a non-profit environment and volunteer management preferred
  • Demonstrated capability to effectively communicate orally and in writing
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills, superb time management, attention to detail and ability to be self- motivated and disciplined
  • Knowledge of the nonprofit sector and Northern Virginia is a plus
  • Willingness to adjust hours to accommodate the needs of the job (including evenings and weekends) Local travel required must have transportation
  • Excellent working knowledge of software applications including Word, Excel and Publisher and Gift Works
