Esperanza Immigrant Rights Project of Catholic Charities of Los Angeles, Inc., is a non-profit law firm which provides community education and legal representation to Southern California’s most vulnerable immigrant communities. Esperanza specifically provides assistance to immigrants who are in detention and/or removal proceedings, and focuses on complex immigration cases which may involve unaccompanied minors, mental health issues, and criminal or gang history. Esperanza has provided legal services to immigrants and their families in Los Angeles for over 15 years. Responsibilities: 

Esperanza seeks a Managing Attorney for our Representation Program. The Managing Attorney will provide supervision of legal representation to immigrants in removal proceedings and related state court proceedings. The Managing Attorney will also be expected to carry a caseload of their own, consisting of a variety of affirmative and defensive immigration cases for both adults and children. The Managing Attorney will directly supervise staff attorneys and work with the Directing Attorney to ensure contract compliance, data management and reporting. 

Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate degree;
  • Active, California State Bar License (preferred), or license from another jurisdiction;
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in the practice of law, preferably in immigration and/or public interest law;
  • Immigration court litigation experience strongly preferred;
  • Strong case management, legal research, and legal writing skills required;
  • Interest in working with and a strong ability to relate to young, newly arrived immigrants, those suffering from mental illness, clients with long criminal histories or past gang affiliation required;
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to zealously pursue novel and “outside-the-box” legal theories;
  • Experience supervising lawyers and/or law students preferred;
  • Spanish language proficiency preferred;
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work under pressure with limited supervision required;
  • Passion for social justice for immigrants required.
