We are looking for 1 Day shift and 1 Evening shift Supervisor at our Kenmore location.

We are seeking a responsible and energetic individual with a passion for engaging families at our shelter. The Shelter Services Supervisor works directly with parents and children experiencing homelessness who need a safe setting to find refuge and access program services as they seek stable housing. General responsibilities include leading designated shifts to provide guests with the support, resources, and healthy boundaries needed to create a safe and respectful shelter environment; training, supporting, and scheduling staff; ensuring shift duties and documentation are completed by shelter staff; and coordinating and facilitating guest activities and the daily program schedule.

FLSA status: This is a full-time non-exempt position

This position reports to: Site Director

This position supervises: Shift Leads and Support staff who work on designated shift

Schedule: This position has a base schedule of Tuesday-Saturday 4pm-12:30am. The position requires flexibility and willingness to work outside the base schedule, including nighttime and weekend hours to respond to shift needs, addressing staff scheduling issues, and helping find and provide shift coverage.

Starting Pay Range: $20.50 - $23.50/hour


Key Responsibilities

Training and Direction of Shift Staff 40%

• Ensure that shift staff understand and are carrying out workplace policies and procedures and all job duties

• Provide on-site training for staff on designated shifts, including training for all items on the onboarding checklist 

• Provide regular coaching and performance feedback; facilitate weekly/bi-weekly 1:1 meetings with each Lead and Support Staff member on shift

• Communicate employee performance issues of concern to and collaborate with the Site Director to resolve these; provide input on performance management and annual performance reviews and documentation

• Actively work towards racial equity goals; strive for racially equitable outcomes; take responsibility for creating and maintaining affirming communities for people of color, immigrants and refugees, trans and gender-non-conforming folks, and other populations who routinely encounter systemic oppressions

• Promote and model principals of Housing First, trauma-informed care, and motivational interviewing to staff, guests, service providers, and volunteers

• Maintain ongoing and open communication with Site Director, as well as program staff and shift staff at the site

• In the absence of the Site Director, act as the Mary’s Place representative for on-site visits by CPS, the police, outside vendors, neighbors, and others; collaborate with the Site Director, Program Officers, and leadership as needed

• Facilitate team meetings for staff on designated shifts; implement quarterly team-building activities and staff development plans in collaboration with the Site Director

• Ensure the completion of general housekeeping tasks by staff and guests

• Ensure that shift staff are updated on Mary’s Place and site communications needed to perform their jobs and to serve guests, including the hand-off of information and guest updates between each shift

• Oversee the disposition of guest complaints when elevated from shift Leads and Support Staff, ensuring timely and fair resolution in accordance with Mary’s Place policies; provide on-call crisis management to shelter staff


Guest Services and Volunteer Interactions 40%

• Elevate the voices of our guests in all considerations and work with staff and volunteers

• Collaborate with guests; work with the Site Director; Housing, Employment, Health, and Youth Services staff to inform, implement, and adhere to daily structured programming

• Assist families experiencing homelessness with any issues that may arise, including working directly with guests and staff to provide crisis management and setting appropriate limits and boundaries

• Create and uphold a creative, team-centric, and collaborative culture and approach to guest services and job performance; model this behavior and coach staff on designated shifts toward a constructive, solution-oriented approach to their work

• Facilitate emergency shelter intakes and program exits as needed; maintain shelter occupancy rate of at least 95%, with target occupancy rate of 100%

• Work with the Site Director to maintain up-to-date knowledge of community resources and to provide culturally relevant referrals to families; ensure that shift shelter staff have access to information on relevant community resources

• Participate in bi-weekly case conferencing calls; collaborate with guests and Housing Team and to actively support families rapid move into stable housing

• Support volunteer activities and develop positive relationships with volunteers and community partners by facilitating their involvement and interaction with Mary’s Place programs and services

• Ensure shelter shift duties are completed and the environment remains clean, inviting, and sanitary


Scheduling and Documentation 20%

• Create and maintain the staffing schedules of designated shifts, ensuring shift coverage when there are absences or staff shortages; coordinate with on-call staff and the Site Director as needed

• Review and approve shift staffs’ time sheets, ensuring their accuracy and completeness

• Facilitate an established schedule across designated shifts, including activities, meals, clean-up, and other facility logistics

• Participate in interviews and recommend applicants for hire

• Maintain appropriate guest records and documentation in Mary’s Place database; ensure shift staff are maintaining Agency documentation during their shift

• Assist with inventory and weekly supply orders


The Shelter Services Supervisor will also perform other duties as assigned by the Site Director.


Skills/Qualifications Required

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience; degree in social services or related field is preferred

• 2+ years of experience in a supervisory role

• 2+ years of experience working in social services or a related field; experience working in a shelter setting or with homeless population strongly desired 

• Understanding of the effects of systemic racism and its intersections with poverty and homelessness

• Proven ability to form positive relationships with guests, staff, and volunteers, and to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment

• Demonstrated problem solving, conflict mediation, and crisis management skills

• Ability to set and model appropriate professional boundaries and to remain calm in stressful situations

• Attention to detail, excellent organizational and time-management skills

• Highly motivated, resourceful, flexible, and professional; able to maintain a positive attitude and display a sense of humor even under pressure

• Demonstrated understanding of trauma-informed care and Housing First

• Exhibits compassion and empathy, and demonstrates these qualities with people from multi-racial and multi-cultural backgrounds and gender identities

• Fluency and literacy in English; fluency in other languages is a plus

• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including active listening, motivational interviewing, and meeting facilitation skills

• Advanced proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite and demonstrated ability to learn other software and database programs quickly; experience with Agency software preferred

• Ability to converse with and listen to people in many different settings

• Ability to use a computer and telephone, as well as other standard office equipment

• Frequently required to stand, walk, use fingers, hands, and arms

• Ability to occasionally push, pull, lift, and/or carry supplies up to 25 pounds

• Work takes place in a social services environment where long periods of sitting, working on a computer, walking to various work areas, going up and down stairs, and standing are required

• Travel to program sites and meetings outside the site and around the county are necessary

• Ability to work in an environment where there may be animals present, including dogs
