Program Overview
The Sunaire Emergency Shelter Program is a trauma-informed, low-barrier, and person-centered initiative designed to stabilize individuals and families experiencing homelessness in the City of Mesa. The program aligns with the City’s Office of Homeless Solutions and HUD’s HOME-ARP framework, targeting Qualifying Populations (QP1–QP4), including those experiencing or at risk of homelessness, survivors of domestic violence, and individuals facing special challenges such as disabilities or aging out of institutions.
Role and Responsibilities
The Site Supervisor is the on-site operational lead for a shift (day / evening / overnight). They ensure safe, orderly, trauma-informed shelter operations; supervise frontline staff; coordinate on-site logistics and resident safety; and act as the Site Director’s delegated authority for their shift.
Key responsibilities include:
- Open/close shift briefings, review handover notes, ensure smooth continuity between shifts.
- Make real-time operational decisions to maintain shelter functioning (room assignments, common area use, meals, cleaning cadence).
- Supervise Resident Support Staff, Security, Intake/Data staff and volunteers on shift; assign tasks, approve short-term schedule changes, and check performance.
- Conduct quick coaching/corrective conversations and document any personnel incidents.
- Lead initial response to medical, behavioral, or safety incidents; activate emergency protocols and arrange EMS or law enforcement contact as required.
- Document incidents and complete shift incident reports for Program Manager review
- Support intake staff during surge periods, ensure intake/check-in follows trauma-informed scripts and HMIS/data protocols, and confirm eligibility where required.
- Manage bed/room assignments to respect family needs, gender-responsiveness, and isolation needs.
- Track daily supply levels (food, hygiene, linens), approve on-shift distributions, request replenishment per procedures.
- Monitor resident satisfaction concerns during shift, de-escalate conflicts, and ensure dignity/respect standards are upheld (zero-tolerance for discrimination).
Qualifications and Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Counseling (Master’s preferred), or a related field and 2 years supervisory experience in shelter, emergency management, or social services.
- Relevant certification and/or licensure (e.g., certified addictions counselor) may substitute for educational requirements.
- Experience assisting clients with public benefit applications (e.g., SNAP, Social Security, Medicaid).
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to build trusting relationships with vulnerable populations and work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Familiarity with trauma-informed, harm reduction, and culturally competent service approaches.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred but not required.
- Proficiency in maintaining case documentation and adhering to confidentiality standards.
- Able to thrive in a fast-paced, multicultural environment.
