The Torture Abolition and Survivors Support Coalition (TASSC) International is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that provides services to survivors of torture. TASSC recognizes the psychological effects of torture and assists survivors with their immediate medical, legal, housing, and employment needs. TASSC’s wraparound services are designed to encourage and supplement the efforts of survivors who come to us seeking independence, self-sufficiency, and healthy futures. Four programs are the cornerstones of our work and address the main areas of concern for many survivors: Social Services, Wellness, and Community Outreach, Legal Services, and Advocacy. All members of TASSC are eligible for services and are provided with personalized and purposeful support. 

 

TASSC is looking for a Wellness and Community Outreach Manager, reporting to the Executive Director, to work with the organization to reach the following goals:

  • TASSC members (clients) engagement in group therapy and community activities
  • Provide therapy to TASSC members
  • Promote trauma-informed care in the community


TASSC’s main office is in Washington, DC, and a satellite office will be opened in Silver Spring, MD. TASSC is dedicated to providing both in-person and virtual services to survivors as COVID safety protocols allow. The position offers flexibility on a hybrid model, subject to discussion with the Legal Services Program Manager and the changing public health reality.


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinate efforts to encourage and start support groups and therapeutic community activities
  • Provide individual therapy
  • Recruit and supervise three interns per year
  • Coordinate community outreach
  • Coordinate medical and psychological evaluations for TASSC legal clients
  • Provide trauma-informed care training to new interns, new staff members, and the community as needed


JOB REQUIREMENTS 

  • Master’s degree or higher in the social services related field (Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, etc.) and a license (LCSW-C or LPC) in Maryland 
  • Experience working with immigrant survivors of trauma preferred
  • Fluent in English. Knowledge of another language like French, Amharic, Spanish is preferred.
  • Knowledge of social services and connection to the immigrant communities within the DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia area is preferred; 
  • Desire to work with an interdisciplinary team in representing the best interest of the client; 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent time-management and organizational skills; 
  • Adaptable to shifting priorities and working in different offices;
  • Demonstrated capacity to work independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to assess and appropriately handle mental health emergencies, including referring to the supervisor or other senior staff as appropriate.
  • Commitment to working with survivors of torture; 
  • Desire to work effectively with all TASSC staff, including the management, Legal Services Program Manager and team members, pro bono attorneys, case managers, advocacy team members, job counselors, interns, and volunteers; 
  • Ability to communicate patiently, respectfully, and empathetically with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including survivors of torture from many different countries; 
  • A team-building, collegial approach to interacting with coworkers; 
  • A commitment to learning about the effects of torture on survivors, their families, and their communities.
