Description

Berkeley Playhouse is seeking a General Manager to start ASAP. We are a dual producing entity with both a robust Musical theater Conservatory program and a five production professional Musical Theater season. Candidates should have previous experience in non-profit or arts management, be committed to working in a team environment, and be highly organized, flexible, positive and creative under pressure.


The General Manager reports to the Executive Director and oversees day-to-day operations, finance management and marketing, and coordinates fundraising efforts and events.


The GM manages the Patron Services team, Marketing Team, Facilities team and the Managing Associate. This position requires strong communication skills and excellent organizational skills and follow through. The GM ensures the smooth day-to-day operations of the theater.

 

Desired qualifications: Nonprofit management experience required. Excellent verbal, organizational and interpersonal skills. Experience with nonprofit budgeting, HR, and fundraising a plus.

In support of the Founder/Artistic Director’s vision and under the direction of the Executive Director, the General Manager (GM) oversees operations, institutional development, and fundraising functions at Berkeley Playhouse. The GM develops, implements and communicates systems, procedures and protocols for the departments under his/her supervision, facilitates departmental coordination, and helps to create and maintain a positive and professional working environment.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

1. OPERATIONS:

  • Under the direction of the ED, oversees annual budget and oversees day to day financial operations.
  • With ED guidance, creates and implements marketing plan for Professional Season productions and Conservatory programs
  • Negotiates, administers and executes all commercial tenant contracts and oversees tenant relations
  • Maintains a healthy relationship with the City of Berkeley regarding community and neighborhood issues
  • Maintains strong relationship with Theatre Bay Area
  • Handles all licensing and contract negotiations with theatrical licensing
  • Coordinates the MASTER CALENDAR for Berkeley Playhouse with input from Executive Director and Director of Education.
  • Ensures that direct reports work effectively, and have resources necessary to do their jobs, while regularly maintaining their department’s budget and systems, and annually reviews staff reporting to him/her.
  • Serves as signer on checking accounts of BP and JMCA, Inc, and other business documents; serves as company representative for insurance, workers’ comp, IRS, EDD, etc., oversees and signs lease agreements with major tenants, and short-term renters.
  • Oversees all Human Resources administration, including insurance and Personnel Policy Manual
  • Oversees and prioritizes maintenance of the historic 108-year-old Julia Morgan Theater
  • Oversees patron services and front-of-house patron experience.
  • Meets weekly with ED and with each dept. under his/her management
  • Supports ED to prepare board reports for meetings.
  • Maintains company records, including board minutes and bylaws.
  • Attends all Professional Season Opening Nights.



2. FUNDRAISING & MARKETING

  • With ED directive, oversees and administers fundraising efforts and marketing calendars, including new Spotlight donor program, annual campaigns, special events and parties
  • Organizes and executes Solano Stroll & Rockridge Out & About
  • With the support of the ED, creates grant calendar and renews/writes current grant applications (3-5 annually) and final reports and researches new funding opportunities
  • Maintains California Cultural Data Project
  • Attends Berkeley Cultural Trust meetings monthly when possible (this may be filled by rotating Board members or others).
  • Manages the preparation of solicitation materials; prepares briefings and required materials for meetings with foundations, corporations and government. 
  • Packages and solicits sponsorships and in-kind support for various campaigns and program ads
