The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking applicants for the position of Associate Director manage fundraising, outreach, events, and cultivation of the San Francisco area donor community, and to represent the work of Human Rights Watch. This full-time position will report to the San Francisco Director, in the Development and Outreach Department.

Due to COVID-19, many of our global offices are currently closed or operating in reduced capacities. The successful candidate may be required to work remotely initially, or as local mandates require. We recognize that this moment, during the COVID-19 pandemic, is a uniquely difficult time for most people, particularly those with caregiving responsibilities, and we aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position.

Responsibilities

1. Represent the work of Human Rights Watch to the San Francisco area community to build financial support and broaden HRW’s donor community of supporters, ambassadors, and partners. 

2. Collaborate with the San Francisco team to build the base of support for the organization, including by identifying, cultivating, and soliciting new prospective donors, existing donors, and San Francisco Committee members. 

3. Work with the Director to develop engagement strategies. 

4. Oversee and manage fundraising, outreach, and cultivation events in the San Francisco area, which may include events such as an annual fundraising event, researcher briefings, small dinners, film screenings, and receptions. 

5. Work with the Director to build, cultivate and steward an active pipeline of leadership-level donors and prospects.

6. Manage communications for the San Francisco Committee and donor community including programmatic updates, fundraising appeals, social media, and targeted outreach.

7. Oversee gift processing and donor support services for San Francisco in Salesforce, including but not limited to mailings, gift tracking and gift acknowledgments.

8. Manage fundraising-specific team processes, including regular team meetings, metrics, fundraising reports. Lead engaging, productive meetings. Create agendas, prepare background materials, and conduct follow-up. 

9. Track team budgets, metrics, reports, and expenses. Help ensure that resources are allocated appropriately.

10. Perform other tasks, as required. 

Qualifications

Education: A 4-year degree or equivalent experience is required. 

Experience: A minimum of five years of fundraising/event planning and management experience. 

Related Skills and Knowledge:

1. Ability to effectively build relationships and engage with a variety of leaders, donors, partners, committee members, and board members is required.

2. Creativity, initiative, follow-through, and excellent organizational skills are required.

3. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required.

4. Strong interpersonal skills to work collaboratively within HRW as well as with external partners are required.

5. Ability to multi-task effectively, including having good planning skills, and ability to work well under pressure are required. 

6. Demonstrated commitment to human rights issues and the capacity to master and represent the mission and programs of HRW are required.

7. Strong computer skills are required. Experience with donor databases and knowledge of social media are highly desirable.
