Overview,   New York City Relief (NYCR) is a Christian non-profit  serving the homeless in the NYC/NJ metro area for over 30 years. NYCR consists of two outreach models; The Relief Bus and The Relief Co-op.  We are customized, mobile resource centers for people struggling with homelessness.   We serve nutritious homemade soup and fresh Portuguese rolls to anyone in need and offer warm friendship and support. Once staff and volunteers build trust, we try to connect our guests to shelter, job training/employment, medical help, drug/alcohol rehabilitation and other life-transforming services.


Job Summary,

The Finance Manager will be responsible for managing all day to day responsibilities regarding the finance department processes as a preparer to be reviewed by the department head. The Finance Manager will be responsible for all daily, weekly and monthly processes including account reconciliations and preparing financial statements, while supplementing the Chief Financial Officer’s responsibilities in the quarterly and annual scope. This position will require collaboration throughout the entire organization in the role of enforcing budget and spending compliance as well as providing vital financial information for those department heads to make financially well informed decisions. At their core the Finance Manager will be responsible for overseeing bookkeeping, data processing, financial reporting and assisting in the annual external audit, but will also be responsible for many additional levels of involvement within the department and organization.  This position reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Elysia DelVecchio, CPA. 


To be successful in this role,

The Finance Manager must exhibit the following:

  • Must have a CPA or be in the process of completing a CPA license (ex. 3 of 4 parts must already be passed).
  • Excellent communication skills with staff, donors, volunteers & guests.
  • A healthy relationship with feedback; knowing its value, its power, and its importance in shaping performance standards. 
  • Flexibility; we do what needs to be done! That’s not always an exact science. 
  • Problem solving skills. A solutions-based mindset is our GOLD STANDARD.  
  • Systems oriented as there are multiple data processing and information systems used in daily operations.
  • A firm grasp of accounting concepts, posting journal entries and preparing financial statements.
  • Self Starter Qualities. Our business has grown and shifted dramatically within the past 2 years. Many of our processes are well defined but we are looking for someone who can see the gaps and with their expertise, experience and solution-based mindset make our finance processes better.
  • Intermediate skills in Excel and Google Sheets formulas (VLOOKUP, SUMIF, Data Validation, Pivot tables etc.)
  • Excellent documentation skills. The ability to improve upon processes and then effectively document the process.
  • Audit experience. This position will work directly with the CFO and the external auditors for the annual audit. After the experience of the first audit, this position will be responsible for leading the annual audit with overview from the CFO.


Responsibilities,

  • Processing and preparing financial and business forms for the purpose of receiving donations, facilitating purchases, etc. 
  • Recording all transactions in various systems including: Quickbooks Online, Donor Perfect, GiveCloud, Zenefits
  • Perform routine calculations to produce analyses and reports as requested by the CFO
  • Perform Monthly and Quarterly closing procedures 
  • Review, manage, and enforce departmental budget spending on a monthly basis
  • Review and audit financial statements and reports, ensure all calculations and data entries are accurate
  • Reconcile organizational accounts and investigate any discrepancies or errors 
  • Manage and prepare semi-monthly payroll for all employees
  • Assist the CFO in creating financial reports on a regular basis
  • Answers question and provide assistance to stakeholders, employees, and donors as needed
  • Attend finance department and company-wide meetings, sometimes assisting with financial reporting to managers and senior executives
  • Suggest changes or improvements to increase accuracy, efficiency, and cost reductions
  • Managing and coordinating finance interns and those working within a bookkeeping capacity for the organization.


Other Responsibilities,

Be flexible to support other areas of the high-impact ministry as needed with the main focus always being mission fulfillment.  Event management support.  Occasional street outreach support.

Work Schedule and Benefits,  Generous PTO.  BC/BS health insurance (80/20 cost share).  Position works remotely MON to FRI, 9-5PM ET, occasional Saturday as needed.    POST COVID we will eventually have a hybrid of office & remote work.
