Everytown for Gun Safety, the largest gun violence prevention advocacy organization in the country, is seeking a passionate, dedicated professional to join our team as a Legislative Assistant for the Federal Affairs team. As the counterweight to the gun lobby, our work has a very strong focus on pushing for stronger gun laws and defeating dangerous gun lobby priorities in Congress.
As a Legislative Assistant, you will be tasked with providing support to the Federal Affairs team, additionally you will:
- Maintain the Everytown for Gun Safety Political Action Committee activity and recordkeeping (track and respond to PAC event invitations, maintain records of events attended, work with federal campaigns to secure necessary paperwork for issuing PAC checks, and ensure checks are delivered.)
-Manage requests from Members of Congress (serve as intake manager for all Member requests and liaise with the policy and research teams to ensure timely responses are prepared)
-Monitor relevant Congressional activity as our eyes and ears on Capitol Hill (when necessary, attend or watch livestream feeds of relevant Congressional activity such as hearings, press conferences, and floor debates and provide updates to the team)
- Provide weekly updates on federal action to the organization at large by assisting the Deputy Director in preparation of Weekly Updates to Everytown employees
-Review moving legislation to flag potential gun issues and work with the legal/policy teams to determine interest and relevance
-Prepare database of voting records, bill-sponsorship, etc. used to analyze Members’ records and develop legislative strategies
-Prepare Congressional bios and perform background research for events and senior leadership meetings and calls with Members of Congress
-Assist in scheduling meetings and managing Congressional interaction for advocacy days, fly-ins, etc.
-Monitor Congressional activity during organization-wide campaigns and events such as Wear Orange
-Facilitate communications and work with our outside consultants
You’ll need to have:
- 3 years’ experience working in a Congressional office or in the Government Affairs department of a non-profit, corporation, trade association, or lobbying firm.
-Strong writing skills
-A solid understanding of the federal legislative process
-Attention to detail
-Strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task without letting anything fall through the cracks
-Ability to be a self-starter and look around corners for the issue or challenge others have missed-Good time management skills
-Preferred (but not necessarily a requirement): an understanding of federal gun politics and policy
