Food First is seeking a Community Engagement Officer to join our growing team. In this role, the person will provide leadership by representing the organization to maintain, develop and build strong partnerships that advance the Food First mission. This is a new position focused on building support for program development, communications, social engagement, and networking.  

 

The Community Engagement Officer reports to the Executive Director. The person in this position works as part of a team with everyone expected to support each other in meeting the mission. 

 

The ideal candidate will be mission-focused, strategic, self-motivated, well-organized, have strong interpersonal and communication skills, and be adept at diverse cultural competencies. They must have the skills, sensitivity, and personal confidence to execute specified outcomes. The role requires significant independence, analytical skills, strong relationship building, ample people and project management experience, flexibility, agility, discretion, and a willingness to manage any task that might further the implementation or conduct of Food First programs.


Responsibilities and Duties

Fund Development

Grows and strengthens a sustainable fund development program, including:  

  • Managing direct mail operations, which may include serving as liaison to an outsource partner. 
  • Expanding internal capacity for fund development.
  • Directing and monitoring a comprehensive fund development program including annual giving, major giving, foundation and other giving and events
  • Growing the Food First base of supporters
  • Networking in the food justice/sovereignty community, building relationships, and leveraging partnerships
  • Grant writing

Communications/Social Engagement

Grows and strengthens awareness and understanding of the Food First mission, including:

 

  • Managing various communications/social engagement platforms (print and digital).
  • Promoting a culture of innovation and creativity that values continuous improvement, learning and a commitment to amplifying BIPOC voices in the food justice/sovereignty space.
  • Identifying and increasing outreach to new constituencies, government officials, and others to inform and involve them in the Food First mission.
  • Providing mentorship and guidance to alleviate and address individual and group concerns, as necessary.

Special Projects and Initiatives

Works on activities, which present as special needs to grow and sustain the Food First mission, including:

 

  • Leading development, planning, implementation, and analysis of special projects and initiatives as needed.
  • Performing analysis and strategic consultation on key issues impacting the organization; and preparing briefings, memos, or presentations to communicate findings.
  • Helping to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for all individuals with regard to diversity, which may include geography, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, immigration status, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender, sex, age, ability, and religion.
  • Performing other job duties as assigned.

 

Team Membership

Work as a team member in partnership with the Executive Director, Administrative Officer, and others as needed to grow and strengthen the Food First mission. 

Requirements / Qualifications

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant sector or equivalent experience. Master’s degree a plus.
  • Three to 5 years of proven relevant experience in managing communications activities (print and digital). Nonprofit knowledge and experience; experience particularly with organizations that work with vulnerable populations a plus.
  • Three to 5 years of experience in fundraising for nonprofit organizations. Desire to strengthen and grow a fund development program.
  • Strong networking and relationship management skills, including ability to build relationships with donors and other external constituencies.
  • Willingness, availability, and ability to travel.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize.
  • Detail-oriented, self-starter with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proactive research skills used in seeking out opportunities to advance and improve the development fund and communication efficiencies.
  • Creative and innovative.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Compensation and Benefits


The salary range fo this position is $60,000 - $65,000. Food First offers a competitive benefits package, including health insurance and retirement benefits.
