The Mid-Atlantic Region of the Huntington’s Disease Society of America has an opening for a part-time (10-15 hours/month) social worker who will assist Huntington’s Disease families throughout the Region of Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware. The social worker will respond to Helpline calls and emails; mentor support group leaders; lead support group/s if needed, help plan HDSA Education Events, provide in-service education to long term care facilities, home health care agencies, and law enforcement and first responder agencies; and develop and maintain a database of community resources for HD families. The position offers substantial scheduling flexibility, with no set work schedule.
The Huntington’s Disease Society of America is a National, voluntary health organization dedicated to improving the lives of people with Huntington's Disease and their families by promoting and supporting research and medical efforts to eradicate Huntington's Disease, assisting people and families affected by Huntington's Disease to cope with the problems presented by the disease, and educating the public and health professionals about Huntington's disease.
The function of an HDSA Regional Social Worker is to assist individuals and families affected by Huntington’s disease and health care professionals throughout the outlined area by providing an optimum level of support through information and referrals to appropriate resources.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
The desirable candidate should be self-motivated with strong public speaking and excellent organizational skills. Computer proficiency with an emphasis on word processing and database management is required as well as a willingness to develop an understanding of HD and knowledge of local resources.
The candidate is required to have a MSW from an accredited institution. The candidate is required to hold or be eligible to hold a social worker license in at least one state in the region. The candidate must provide their own liability coverage. Experience working with populations affected by a neurological or genetic disease is preferred. This is an independent contracting position. The candidate must reside in one of the states in the region.
