Youth Art Exchange (YAX) is seeking experienced faculty artists to teach arts classes in a variety of disciplines during Summer Bridge 2021. The in-person summer program is for SFUSD rising 9th graders and consists of a five-week long session from 6/7-7/14. The classes will be held on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 10-11:30am and 12:30-2pm at either Balboa High School or Lincoln High School.  


About Youth Art Exchange:

Youth Art Exchange offers free after-school, weekend and summer programs in visual and performing arts to public high school students in San Francisco. Youth Art Exchange sparks a shared creative practice between professional artists and public high school students, furthering youth as leaders, thinkers, and artists in San Francisco. Our programs combine best practices in arts education and youth development. During the school year we offer seven visual & performing art programs (architecture, industrial + product design, fashion design, illustration, music production, darkroom photography, and printmaking).

 

Candidates must be professional artists preferably experienced in working with urban high school youth. Our classes average a 20:1 student ratio. Teaching artists are paid hourly for class time, field trips, prep time (one-to-one with instruction time), scheduled faculty meetings, as well as regular check-ins with program staff. This is a temporary position. The total contract amount for this position is $2800 for 70 hours (30 hours instruction time, 30 hours prep time, 10 hours meeting time). 


Job Description:

- Developing curriculum and syllabus in collaboration with Program Manager.

- Attending faculty meetings.

- Having ongoing communication with students, their families, and YAX staff regarding student issues.

- Exposing students to the Bay Area arts scene.

- Developing weekly lesson plans and arranging supplies with the Program Manager.

- Curriculum and reflection meetings with the Program Manager.

- Developing and planning class field trips, and final public exhibition / performance.

3. Candidates will be invited to come in for an interview with YAX staff and Youth Advisory Board. They will be asked to bring a presentation of sample work (candidate's own and former students') and a sample lesson plan. As part of the interview, candidates will be asked to facilitate a 15-minute activity demonstrating their approach to teaching.
