About the Center for Coalfield Justice:


The Center for Coalfield Justice fights for coalfield communities through advocacy, education, and organizing. Our approach for working with area residents values their knowledge about the land, waterways, and communities. Our recognition of local expertise is grounded in the belief that people who are facing injustice directly are the most knowledgeable and should be leading the efforts towards justice. We blend organizing and legal work to create an expanded set of options for achieving justice than might be produced by following solely legal or organizing approach.


Community Organizer Role:


The Community Organizer will work out of our Washington, PA office on environmental and social justice issues, primarily addressing problems that arise from fracking and the petrochemical facilities in the region. The Organizer must be able work with directly impacted people and invest in their skills to advocate for their communities and work to diversify our economy, reducing our dependence on fossil fuels. 


Responsibilities:

  • Actively engage with community members and provide training, support, and information to advocate for their communities and the region towards a healthy environment.
  • Moblize residents for events, actions, and meetings across the region through direct outreach like canvassing, phone banking, texting, etc.
  • Support CCJ’s Campaign Manager to resist the petrochemical buildout in the region and increase in fracking:
  • attend regional meetings and support localized resistance to facilities across the region
  • build a team of people to advance a collective strategy to resist petrochemical facilities and advocate for the transition towards clean energy, healthy environments, and thriving economies.
  • Lead CCJ’s Economic Diversity work in Greene County, PA
  • Plan four economic justice trainings across Greene County.
  • Build economic justice team to push for economic justice in Greene County.
  • Provide support to other staff and volunteers as needed.


Qualifications:

  • Experience in community organizing as staff or volunteer or willingness to learn.
  • Self motivated, independent worker
  • Works well in fast paced team environment and respects deadlines
  • Strong communication skills (writing sample required)
  • Ability to work effectively and creatively with diverse people and organizations
  • Willingness to work flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekend and occasionally long hours
  • Proficiency in google docs, gmail, office suite, and social medial and willingness to develop additional skills.


Travel:


Owning or regular access to an operating car is required. Willingness to travel and the ability to navigate cities and rural communities is required. Travel to coalition and ally meetings across the region is required. Opportunities to travel across the country for training or conferences can be expected. CCJ provides mileage reimbursement at the Federal rate and covers overnight lodging when working away from home.


Compensation:


The Center for Coalfield Justice is an equal opportunity employer. Compensation range is $30 K to $35K with generous paid time off and fully paid health, dental, and vision care.
