Workers’ Rights Supervising Attorney Position

The Community Development Project (CDP) at the Urban Justice Center seeks applicants for the position of Supervising Attorney in our Workers’ Rights practice (“the practice”), which currently includes two staff attorneys, two senior staff attorneys, and a paralegal. The Supervising Attorney will supervise staff, fellows, volunteers, and interns within the practice. The practice conducts legal services for community-based worker centers and organizations in all five boroughs of New York City. The legal work of the practice supports the organizing campaigns of partner organizations and centers around state and federal court litigation of minimum wage and overtime violations, tip theft, labor trafficking, retaliation, discrimination, and sexual harassment claims. The practice conducts legal clinics at worker centers and community based organizations and assists workers with complaints before New York and federal administrative agencies, including but not limited to the New York and U.S. Departments of Labor and the National Labor Relations Board. The successful candidate will be passionate about building collective worker power and advocating for low-wage workers, particularly immigrants and people of color connected to grassroots organizing campaigns and will have an understanding of working with organizers in CDP’s unique model. The Supervising Attorney reports to the Director of CDP.
What You Will Do:
· Supervise, mentor, and collaborate with staff and volunteers to foster professional development of the team in the substance and practice of law consistent with CDP’s unique model;
· Collaborate with the practice area staff in the representation of low-wage workers;
· Collaborate with the practice area staff to develop and implement strategic planning for the practice;
· Assist the CDP development team in grant management and fundraising, and monitor the performance of work within the practice area to ensure compliance with grant requirements;
· Develop and maintain, together with staff, relationships with worker centers and community based organizations throughout New York City;
· Develop and maintain, together with staff, relationships with private and pro bono counsel for co-counsel relationships, which can involve supporting staff in maintaining relationships between outside counsel and partner groups;
· Develop and maintain, together with staff, relationships with other non-profit legal providers, and governmental agencies seeking to enforce laws protecting workers’ rights;
· Represent the practice with legislative and regulatory bodies on behalf of low-wage workers and community-based organizations, primarily at the city and state level; and
· Participate in management of CDP together with other CDP managers and the Director.
Who You Are:
· Admission to the New York Bar, and at least five years of relevant substantive legal experience required;
· You enjoy and are experienced in working with and leading diverse teams in a collaborative model that uplifts all voices on the team and prioritizes professional development. You are skilled in bringing together various individuals and perspectives to arrive at consensus. You are able to work with individuals from various cultural and professional backgrounds;
· You are a skilled communicator and have strong writing, analytical and verbal communication skills.
· You are a strategic thinker, problem solver and can demonstrate good judgment;
· Strong organizational and analytical skills required;
· Federal court litigation is strongly preferred;
· Legislative and/or regulatory advocacy experience is preferred;
· Experience working with or in worker centers or other community-based organizations is preferred; and
· Fluency in a foreign language is preferred.

CDP’s staff attorneys are on a fixed salary scale, and the salary for this position will be determined based on years of relevant experience in accordance with the scale.
