Deep seeks an experienced manager of youth programs to support its efforts to empower Savannah’s young people to thrive as learners, community leaders, and agents of change. 

The Youth Programs Manager is a salaried full-time position (40 hours/week) based out of the Deep Center office, reports directly to the Director of Youth Programs, and is responsible for designing, implementing, and leading Deep’s introductory program, the Young Author Project.


SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Recruit, hire, and train volunteer writing mentors to co-lead weekly workshops that respond to young people’s and the community’s needs
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate recruitment strategies to expand the number of volunteers and youth in programs
  • Evaluate workshop quality, volunteer performance, and program effectiveness, ensuring facilitation of youth-centered dialogue and composition that supports literacy, agency, and learning for Deep’s young people and their village of support
  • Assist young people with creation and exhibition of final products, including collecting and editing student work for publication
  • Plan community-building events and artist development opportunities for adult stakeholders in Deep’s writing community, including writing fellows and teaching artists
  • Maintain strong, strategic relationships with site partners and adult stakeholders for the successful operation of youth programming
  • In consultation with Director of Youth Programs, recruit and manage creative partners (illustrators, designers, photographers, etc.), as needed
  • Develop and refine program curriculum and ensure alignment with Deep method and pedagogy 
  • Coordinate end of semester events and publication for the Young Author Project 
  • Direct, plan, and coordinate the work of Young Author Project program staff and teaching artist(s), including supervision, evaluation, training, and team building


IDEAL CANDIDATE:

  • Committed to social and economic justice regarding race, gender, sexuality, dis/ability, class, and age
  • Familiarity and comfort with organization strategies that include both digital online and real-world
  • Detail-oriented and highly organized
  • At least 3-5 years experience managing staff toward ambitious goals and deadlines 
  • Experienced with project-based or workshop-style, youth-centered learning
  • Experienced copywriter, copyeditor, and proofreader
  • An assets-based understanding of the daily challenges faced by low-income people, especially communities of color
  • Ability to work independently, navigate obstacles, discern priorities, meet competing deadlines, and handle multiple projects
  • Possesses exceptionally strong oral and written communication skills
  • Has reliable transportation and is able to travel locally as needed on a regular basis
  • Well-read in diverse literary genres and authors, especially those that reflect the experiences of Deep youth
  • Identifies as a creative writer
  • Possesses exceptionally strong oral and written communication skills
  • Warm and enthusiastic interpersonal skills
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office and Google Docs, comfort with technology
  • Nonprofit and/or teaching experience highly preferred
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite and website updating a plus
  • Able to be an active participant in an open and democratic work culture
  • Dedicated to Deep’s mission
