The Women’s Bar Foundation (WBF) is dedicated to ensuring access to justice for low-income individuals.  The WBF is committed to providing free legal assistance to low-income individuals and their families in matters related to domestic violence, end-of-life decision making, and other critical legal issues.

SUMMARY OF POSITION:  The Family Law Project for Domestic Abuse Survivors (“Family Law Project”) recruits, trains, and mentors volunteer attorneys to represent low-income domestic abuse survivors in the Massachusetts Probate and Family and District Courts.  The Family Law Project provides “in-house” representation of clients in abuse prevention order and family law cases by having its Staff Attorney take cases directly.  

The Staff Attorney position will begin as soon as possible and continue for approximately six and a half months.  The Staff Attorney is responsible for handling cases referred to the Women’s Bar Foundation’s Family Law Project for Domestic Abuse Survivors, including Abuse Prevention Orders and family law matters.  The Staff Attorney will represent clients before the court in virtual or in-person hearings several times a week, depending on current court protocols.  The Staff Attorney will assist the Director of Pro Bono Programs with referrals.  The Staff Attorney will also provide limited assistance representation on family law cases and legal assistance to self-represented litigants.  The Staff Attorney will provide general support to the WBF’s two other pro bono projects, the Elder Law Project and the Women’s Prison and Re-Entry Project’s Clemency Project as needed.

We operate a collaborative office, where each staff member helps the other to offer excellent, culturally and trauma responsive assistance to prospective and current clients and provide outstanding training and support to volunteer attorneys and mentors.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provide direct representation to clients including representing clients in the Probate and Family Courts and in District Courts, either virtually or in-person, subject to court guidance.  

• Provide legal assistance to self-represented litigants.

• Assist the Director of Pro Bono Programs with the training, recruitment, and mentoring of Family Law Project (FLP) volunteer attorneys.  Assist with the administration of FLP including working with the lawyers and law firms who participate in FLP.

• Assist with WBF trainings and special events.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Admission to the Massachusetts Bar.

• Knowledge of and experience with domestic violence survivors.

• Ability to set appropriate boundaries and limitations with clients.

• At least two years of experience in family law.

• Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income clients, culturally responsive communication skills.

• Strong written and oral communication skills, strong organizational skills, and excellent attention to detail.

• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).  

• Displays initiative; follows through with assignments and projects. 

• Strong time management abilities. 

• Enthusiastic and positive attitude.  

• Ability to multi-task, work independently and be a strong team member. 

• Experience with CiviCRM preferred, but not required. 

• Fluency in a second language preferred.

COMPENSATION: 

Salary for temporary full-time employment is at an annual salary rate of $50,000.  We offer a benefits package that includes paid holidays.
