Job Description: Shelter Manager

Reports to: Executive Director

Job Overview: Full-time, Exempt

Dutchess County SPCA (DCSPCA) is looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Shelter Manager to provide compassionate and attentive care for animals housed at DCSPCA, as well as maintain a clean, healthy, and safe environment for the animals and the public. He/She/They will also be responsible for curating and maintaining a positive social media presence and overall profile of the organization in the community and will be responsible for achieving Shelter adoption goals. The Shelter Manager will also be responsible for hiring, scheduling, and training of volunteers, adoption and kennel staff. Qualified candidates for this position should be self-starters and efficient, as well as possess a high degree of comfort working as part of a team.

Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

Canine and Feline Care & Handling:

·        Manages kennel staff to ensure animals receive adequate food, water, enrichment and exercise

·        Responsible for on-going assessment, in conjunction with other staff and/or outside, contracted expertise, of animals within the Shelter with respect to their health, welfare, general condition and suitability for adoption; communicating promptly to the Shelter Vet staff when an animal is observed to require veterinary attention

·        Co-operates with DCSPCA Veterinarian instructions

·        Co-operates with DCSPCA Humane Law Enforcement Officer’s instructions.

·        Provides training in animal handling to volunteers and visitors, and ensures all animals are handled in a safe, compassionate, and positive manner

Cleaning and Sanitation:

·        Ensures sanitation and disease control protocols are adhered to by DCSPCA staff

·        Performs and supervises daily cleaning and sanitation of animal housing, walkways, and drainage with the Kennel Staff

·        Ensures the Shelter and surroundings are kept clean, tidy and presentable for the community

Canine Management:

·        Responsible for selecting, integrating and monitoring dogs in play group        

·        Monitors canine behavior

·        Performs and monitors dog training, handling, socialization and exercise

·        Supervises and supports Adoption Counselors to achieve successful adoptions

Administrative/Human Resource Duties:

·        Provide leadership and direction to Adoption and Kennel Staff

·        Makes hiring and dismissal recommendations; provides disciplinary actions; prepares work schedules and assignments. On-boards new hires and provides training

·        Maintains written policies, procedures, protocols, forms and training materials for all work done at the site, ensuring all work is performed in accordance with DCSPCA policies and procedures

·        Responsible for reporting regularly to the Executive Director and Operations Director on shelter and adoption statistics and for communicating any issues, problems, accidents or concerns regarding animals, staff, volunteers or the general public promptly

Supervision of Volunteers:

·        Responsible for scheduling, supervising and training volunteers working with dogs and cats in the Shelter

·        Works closely with the Development Associate/Volunteer Coordinator to determine volunteer staffing needs and to promptly address volunteer performance concerns, conflicts, or feedback

·        Ensures all health and safety measures and procedures are observed and adhered to by volunteers and the general public within the Shelter.

Facility Maintenance:

·        Works closely with the Facilities Manager to ensure shelter facility issues are addressed and handled in a timely fashion

·        Assisting Facilities Manager with inventory control of equipment/tools, feeding and cleaning supplies

·        Ensure the ‘Maintenance Task List’ is kept up to date and works closely with the Facilities Manager to prioritize tasks

Marketing & Development:

·        Develops and maintains strong community relationships, including but not limited to local businesses, supporting organizations and humane partners

·        In collaboration with the Development team, assist with the marketing and promotion of adoptions and community profile

·        In coordination with the Development team, schedule and coordinate in-house adoption promotions, conduct tours, assist with community outreach and events as needed

Other Duties

·        Organizes animal transports as needed

·        Provides high quality customer service to people who visit or call the DCSPCA

·        Ensures safe, high quality adoptions in accordance with DCSPCA policy

·        Stays abreast of industry standards in shelter operations and makes recommendations for improvement

Requirements and Qualifications:

·        High School or equivalency required, Bachelor’s degree preferred

·        2+ years work experience in a shelter, in a role directly associated with the care of animals

·        3-5 years Staff managerial experience

·        Knowledge of best practices in the shelter industry

·        Excellent communication skills with the public, including facility with social media

·        Flexible schedule, able to work weekends

·        Excellent record keeping and attention to detail

·        Ability to function and focus in a demanding and fast-paced environment

·        Excellent written and verbal communication skills

·        Excellent computer skills

·        Collaborative team working style

·        Demonstrate an attitude of consideration and courtesy to members of the public, co-workers, and volunteers

·        Commitment to mission, vision, and values of the DCSPCA
