The Director of Community Organizing and Engagement manages the community organizing and public education strategies of the ACLU-VA. This work will involve supervising a team of community organizers and building authentic relationships with community members while working to advance policy changes for people impacted by the criminal legal system, police violence, voter suppression, and racial injustice. The Director of Community Organizing and Engagement reports to the Chief Program Officer and has a demonstrated and deep commitment to racial justice.


This is a new position, and the individual hired will be able to lead the development of the ACLU-VA’s community organizing and engagement program.


RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategy

  • Work with the Chief Program Officer and other staff to identify the strategies needed to advance the organization’s strategic issue priorities, particularly those strategies and tactics with significant community organizing and public education components that must be informed by the reality on the ground and the lived experiences of community members.
  • Work with community groups and members to identify community priorities.

Community organizing

  • Supervise, train, and mentor the ACLU-VA’s community organizers and lead their efforts to build community support for the organization’s priority issues.
  • Inspire, support, and strengthen activists, volunteers, and community leaders throughout the state.
  • Working closely with the policy team, ensure that the ACLU-VA is represented in coalitions and with community groups.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of community-organizing activities, track outcomes and activist participation.
  • Planning and executing campaign events, actions, and trainings for various audiences.

Public Education

  • In close cooperation with our Communications team, identify community organizations and leaders who are aligned with the ACLU-VA's priority policy issues.
  • Identifying and cultivating strategic partnerships with community-based organizations including new partnerships with community leaders and organizations.
  • Find and develop opportunities for community outreach at events like fairs, celebrations, parades, and conferences.
  • In close cooperation with our Communications and Legal teams, develop know-your-rights materials and conduct know-your-rights trainings.
  • Train and manage volunteers to help the staff promote the ACLU-VA’s mission at events.

Salary Range: $65,975.00 to $91,350.00. Expected starting salary up to mid-range.


Requirements

  

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Demonstrated support of ACLU-VA’s mission including fighting for racial justice.
  • At least 3 years organizing experience leading and executing issue campaigns successfully.
  • At least 1 year experience supervising and developing community organizers.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet multiple deadlines and move projects forward with independence and autonomy.
  • Self-motivation and ability to work well both independently and on a team. 
  • Ability to work well under pressure with a diverse team.
  • Experience organizing in Black and Brown communities.
  • A collaborative mindset and ability to work effectively with legal, policy, and communications staff to achieve shared goals.
  • Ability to work irregular hours, attend evening and weekend meetings, and travel in- and out-of-state. 
  • Driver's license and access to transportation.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Substantive knowledge and understanding of criminal legal reform and voting rights issues.
  • Leadership or supervisory experience in the community, non-profit, or legal fields. 
  • Experience working at an organization with an integrated advocacy model where legal, policy, and community engagement are used collaboratively and cohesively to achieve results. 
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish, Korean, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Arabic, ASL or other language used by marginalized communities across Virginia. 
  • Individuals who have lived or worked in communities directly impacted by racial injustice, including formerly incarcerated individuals, are encouraged to apply.
