THE YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PARTNERSHIP, INC.

Job Announcement:

Senior Work Experience Counselor

WHO WE ARE

The mission of The Youth Employment Partnership (YEP) is to improve the employment and education outcomes for Oakland youth and young adults (ages 14-24) impacted by poverty, foster care, the criminal justice system, school underachievement, and other barriers to work. YEP provides transformative life coaching, critical skill building, and comprehensive education support and work experience. We believe that all young people deserve a chance at success. We also believe that young people are the key to creating a thriving community. Since 1973, YEP has trained more than 26,000 high school youth and 9,000 young adults.

We are a workforce development and education provider recognized not only locally but also by public systems leaders at the state and national level for our preeminent youth employment programming, and in particular, our ability to support youth and young adults with barriers in their journey to reaching their potential through excellent education and employment outcomes.

We provide on-site tutoring for high school credit recovery, high school diploma preparation, and basic skill remediation. As part of our overall strategy to improve the employability of all the young people we work with, we currently operate four social enterprises: a residential construction business, a commercial kitchen, a cafe in the Juvenile Justice Center, and a warehouse. Through these social enterprises and partnerships with businesses that host our interns, we are able to extend our engagement with the young adults in our program and deepen their work experience in high-demand job sectors such as construction, culinary, and warehousing and distribution.

THE ROLE

Senior Work Experience Counselors are responsible for positively changing the lives of 40 high-risk young adults over the course of a year. After outreaching and recruiting these young adults into the program, the Senior Work Experience Counselor will support them in improving their educational level and employability through earning their high school diploma, enrolling and excelling in college or vocational programs, and securing employment with pathways to living wages. In this role, it’s critical to not only believe in the potential of young adults with barriers, but also to possess the ability to facilitate learning opportunities and work experience that will allow them to experience success and failure, to strengthen their appetite for learning new things, to develop independence and self-efficacy, to envision a different trajectory, and to ultimately outgrow the services we provide. Counselors must be able to build relationships with young adults while modeling healthy boundaries and providing support in a way that prepares them for a professional work environment. This role is best suited for a tenacious and agile individual who is passionate about effective direct service but also feels a sense of ownership and commitment to continuous improvement of the program through which the services are provided.
