POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Under general supervision of the Program Director, the WIC Nutritionist is a member of the WIC professional staff. The Nutritionist provides technical, educational, interpretive and office support for the Women, Infants and Children Program; performs related work as required.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Determines eligibility of potential program participants by obtaining and assessing medical, nutritional, personal and financial information; reviews eligibility determinations made by others.
2. Explains eligibility requirements and program parameters to staff and participants.
3. Maintains required documentation of all individual and group client contacts in the WIC Web Information System Exchange (WISE).
4. Loads food benefits onto the WIC Card following established protocols.
5. Counsel participants individually on nutritional and breastfeeding matters and develops and records an individualized nutrition care plan according to established protocols. Monitors the status of high-risk clients to ensure contact and follow-up. Assesses status of other health and social indicators and refers to other health and social services as needed.
6. Conducts group education on nutrition, breastfeeding, and related health topics. Assists with development of new classes and staff training.
7. Promotes positive nutrition, health and breastfeeding messages in the clinic environment; plans and develops educational displays for clients.
8. Promotes breastfeeding among WIC clients, staff and community. Provides leadership to endorse breastfeeding as desired norm; promotes a breastfeeding friendly environment at the WIC site; incorporate breastfeeding promotion and support in staff training. Attends breastfeeding training as needed.
9. Provides culturally competent quality customer service to participants and staff with an attitude of leadership, helpfulness, dignity and respect.
10. Communicates effectively with other agency staff, participants, representatives of community agencies, and the public. Upholds and follows established policies on confidentiality and security.
11. Collaborates with other professionals to promote nutrition and breastfeeding among the WIC population. Participates on committees and collaborative groups as requested by the Program Director.
12. Stays current with findings, standards and practices in the nutrition profession. Stays up-to-date on WIC policies and procedures.
13. Demonstrates commitment to the mission of Community Bridges and the WIC Program.
Assists the Supervising Nutritionist and PD with:
14. Implementing WIC program policies, procedures, and standards of care for high risk clients.
15. Training the WIC Nutrition Assistants (WNA) to receive and maintain state certification for determining participant eligibility.
16. Identifying the educational needs of the staff to provide ongoing staff development.
17. Planning and conducting regular staff training and development.
18. May function as Nutrition Education Coordinator, Breastfeeding Coordinator, LVL and/or RBL as assigned.
