POSITION PROFILE:

Reports to: Clinical Program Manager

Function: KCSARC therapists are experts in providing trauma-specific treatment for victims of sexual assault. They are trained in gold-standard treatment models that have been scientifically proven to be effective. Therapists work with a range of clients who span the ages of 6 through adulthood. Training is provided in Cognitive Processing Therapy, Prolonged Exposure and Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

This type of therapy is not passive as is often the case when the client leads the session. Trauma focused interventions require intense emotional and intellectual presence. The treatment requires active engagement, continuous discovery and strategic intervention by both the therapist and the client. While the therapeutic process is collaborative, sexual assault victims would understandably rather avoid talking and thinking about or experiencing feelings related to their assault. This avoidance actually perpetuates difficulties for survivors. Thus, the trauma therapist owns a directive role in guiding survivors to revisit and recount their memories and reminders of their assault in the context of a safe environment, specifically the therapy session. Through this process, the therapist must be able to ask pertinent, open-ended questions and listen intently to quickly identify maladaptive, trauma-related beliefs about self, others and the world (i.e. beliefs that perpetuate guilt and shame). Therapists can then begin to guide the client and lead them in examining and challenging thinking patterns during their sessions. Because treatment is structured and focused, most client’s complete treatment in an average of 16-20 sessions.

Therapist are supported in their role with weekly supervision as well as access to consultation with national experts.
