Founded in 1990, the New York Legal Assistance Group provides free civil legal services to low-income New Yorkers. The organization serves immigrants, seniors, the homebound, families facing foreclosure, renters facing eviction, low-income consumers, those in need of government assistance, children in need of special education, domestic violence victims, persons with disabilities, patients with chronic illness or disease, low-wage workers, low-income members of the LGBTQ community, Holocaust survivors, and others in need. The organization’s annual operating budget is over $30 million. Serving more than 87,000 New Yorkers annually, New York Legal Assistance Group maintains a paid staff of approximately 290, supported by 2,200 pro bono attorneys and other volunteers and interns. NYLAG seeks a highly motivated temporary, full‐time Immigration Paralegal Navigator to join its staff as part of a coordinated citywide initiative, NYCitizenship. The program reaches immigrant communities across New York City to connect individuals to free immigration legal consultations, document preparation, and application assistance. The Paralegal Navigator will provide Citizenship services offsite at four public library branches in the borough of Queens in a team based model with a NYCitizenship Staff Attorney, under the supervision of a NYLAG Immigrant Protection Unit Supervising Attorney and with full access to NYLAG’s resources. The Paralegal Navigator will handle a caseload of straightforward Citizenship applications, and connect all program participants to NYCitizenship financial counseling services.
Duties and Responsibilities:
· Under the supervision of an attorney, provide application assistance to immigrants eligible for citizenship at four public library branches in Queens
· Assist clients to obtain the documents necessary to apply for relief, fill out appropriate forms, and follow up with clients via phone, mail and email
· Provide support to immigration attorneys and make referrals to other legal service providers for complex cases that are beyond the scope of the NYCitizenship program
· Provide referrals for financial empowerment and other wraparound services
· Create and maintain physical and electronic files, including managing correspondence with clients and documenting correspondence with immigration and other agencies
· Manage data entry in internal and external data management systems and assist with generating reports
· Maintaining regular contact with NYCitizenship program and relevant site staff
· Bachelor’s Degree required
· Fluency is required in at least one of the following languages: Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese
· 1-2 years of immigration experience preferred, but not required
· Experience working with diverse populations
· Excellent written, oral and analytical skills
· Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently in an off-site context.
