The Black Institute is an “action tank” – a think tank that takes action, to promote civil rights, racial and social justice. The mission of The Black Institute is to shape intellectual discourse and dialogue and impact public policy uniquely from a Black perspective (a perspective which includes all people of color in the United States and throughout the Diaspora). In support of the mission, The Black Institute is seeking a bold and dedicated Community Organizer to strengthen and expand TBI issue areas in Education, Economic Fairness, Immigrant Rights, and Environmental Justice.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Run & Manage issue-based campaigns and programs.

• Will work with Administrative & Research department to gather and publish campaign reports.

• Use social media creatively to support campaign strategies.

• Work closely with the Executive and President, to develop strategies for projects and campaigns.

• Implement and promote community forum, social events, town hall, and problem-solving meetings.

• Engage in public speaking events and facilitating campaign meetings.

• Participate in local on state coalitions and campaigns on racial justice , environmental justice, economic fairness, education, and immigrant rights.

• Coordinate local and state TBI campaigns events, trainings and other activities.

• Outreach to, engage, educate and mobilize communities of color, Black immigrants and community leaders.

• Outreach to engage and work alongside Black elected officials, Black leaders and Black grassroots organizers in support of racial justice issues.

• Outreach to local and state leaders on issues significant to TBI.

• Gather and disseminate information on issues significant to TBI.

• Supervise interns and volunteers, as appropriate.

• Perform administrative task and other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

• Organizing experience (labor, community, issue campaign or election-related)

• Knowledge of current racial justice issues, and local, state, and organizations.

• Excellent verbal, writing, analytical, public speaking, and meeting facilitation

• Must be able to multi-task, problem-solve, and prioritize well.

• Self-motivation – a proven ability to work independently.

• A demonstrated commitment to social justice.

• Patient and ability to work well with diverse groups and staff.

• Demonstrated supervisory experience.

• Ability to work flexible hours, including some nights and weekends;

• Must be willing to take direction.

• Desire to grow and learn.

Qualifications

• BS/BA (Required)

• 3- 5 Years of campaigning/organizing experience (required)

• Non-profit experience (required)
