The North Carolina Justice Center is seeking a full-time Communications Specialist to assist with day-to-day online and offline tasks such as publication design, media work, and online engagement; developing and articulating a strong message for progressive social change across a wide range of issue areas; and utilizing a comprehensive digital strategy via social media to advance the reach and message of the Justice Center. The Communications Specialist will work in collaboration with our Director of Communications and Design Director.

The North Carolina Justice Center is the state’s leading research and advocacy organization dedicated to transforming North Carolina’s prosperity into opportunity for all. Our organization comprises of projects that provide in-depth expertise on seven major policy areas. Our staff of researchers, community educators, litigators, public policy advocates, and communications specialists use our unique five-strategy approach to improve the lives of North Carolinians with low incomes.

This important position will be responsible for assisting with Justice Center online publications, including electronic newsletters; assisting with preparation and circulation of news releases, advisories, and action alerts; helping with the design, updates, and maintenance of the Justice Center website; helping develop and implement data-based strategies for engaging and building audiences on social media and through our online system (i.e. Salsa Engage); updating social media sites, including but not limited to Facebook and Twitter, and designing campaigns to expand reach in each of these areas; analyzing metrics for website, social media, and other online properties; writing news releases and conversing with and assisting reporters as needed; and other duties as assigned.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to social justice, equity, and inclusion and enjoy supporting the work of others. She/he will have strong communications or journalism experience in a fast-paced work environment (minimum two years), including experience using online media. Successful applicants will demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills, be exceptionally organized while juggling competing demands, and possess a demonstrated ability to work under tight deadlines. She/he will have superior computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud Suite, have experience working with dynamic websites built in WordPress or similar CMS, and keyboard with speed and accuracy. Ability to travel and work some evenings and weekends required.
