We are looking for an experienced and highly-motivated Director of Finance who will be responsible for the accurate and timely financial management of the organization.

Primary Purpose of the Job

The Director of Finance will oversee the development and implementation of sound and efficient financial systems and controls. The position will be a strategic thought-partner, and report to the Chief Executive Officer. This position works closely with human resources, program management and the Board of Directors to improve organizational effectiveness and build a sustainable competitive advantage for Hively.

Essential Duties:        

  • Manage the accounting and financial operations of the agency, including accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, financial statements, payroll, vendor management, audit and tax preparation, banking, inventory, and cash flow forecasting
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable funding terms and conditions, state and federal laws and generally accepted accounting principles
  • Supervises finance department staff providing training, coaching, support and evaluation
  • Develop the capability of program managers to take responsibility for the financial planning and oversight of their programs
  • Manage the financial budgeting and forecasting process to ensure alignment with and achievement of organizational strategies and priorities
  • Generate regular financial statements and analyses that will allow the CEO and Board to monitor program and organizational performance
  • Supervise the annual audit process and all financial monitoring reviews by governmental agencies
  • Oversee facility inventory, equipment leases and major asset purchases
  • Maintain accounting system and financial operations manual
  • Ensure all mandated financial and statistical reports are filed timely

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum of five years of senior financial management experience
  • B.A required, Master’s Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field is a strong plus
  • Thorough knowledge of accounting standards and principles, especially those that are applicable to a nonprofit organization – GAAP/FASB requirements
  • Previous supervisory experience and the ability to develop and retain staff as well as maintain a high level of performance and to effectively utilize their talents
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills
  • Advanced abilities with Excel spreadsheet and PC-based fund accounting (MIP preferred)
  • Experience with the implementation of accounting codes, general ledger account management, account reconciliation, account analysis, and preparation of financial statements
  • Ability to achieve results in a constantly evolving nonprofit environment, with demonstrated success building systems and tools to support changing funding and program goals
  • Proven track record of maintaining effective internal controls and developing efficient financial policies and procedures
  • Familiarity with laws, regulations, and reporting requirements relating to fiscal management in nonprofit organizations

  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision
  • Ability to sit at a desk for extended amounts of time
  • Ability to stand for extended amounts of time
  • Manual dexterity to use a telephone and computer
  • Facility to hear and understand speech at normal room levels, and to hear and understand speech on the telephone
  • Facility to speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal conversations and over the telephone
  • Physical agility to lift and carry up to 20 pounds and to bend, stoop, walk and reach overhead
  • Physical agility to push/pull, squat, twist and turn
  • Mental acuity to perform the essential functions of this position in an accurate and timely fashion; to make good judgments and decisions; and to evaluate the results of decisions and judgments
