About BUILD

Founded in 1999, BUILD’s mission is to use entrepreneurship to ignite the potential of youth in under-resourced communities and equip them for high school, college and career success. BUILD currently partners with high schools to serve 2,000 students annually in Oakland, East Palo Alto, Washington DC, Boston, and New York. The program is a 4-year high school experience designed to boost student engagement in school and build entrepreneurial, 21st Century skills: communication, collaboration, problem solving, innovation, grit, and self-management. To date, BUILD has incubated over 750 youth businesses, partnered with more than 30 schools and expanded service from one city to five. Entrepreneurship is the hook – college, career, and life success are the goals. 96% of students completing the BUILD program graduate from high school on time, and over 80% go on to college. BUILD envisions an educational system in which all students regardless of background are engaged and prepared for their personal and professional success.

Diversity & Inclusion Statement

For almost two decades, BUILD has worked to address the racial and economic inequity that disproportionately impacts the communities served. BUILD sees the debilitating effects of deep-rooted, institutionalized racism, and acknowledges that what is happening in our country requires a more intentional approach internally.

The Statement

BUILD honors the dignity and worth of every individual and strives to create equity of voice, access, influence and power across lines of difference – both in and beyond BUILD, specifically for groups that have been historically denied social justice. We acknowledge and embrace the entire range of human experience, celebrating the nuance and insights diversity brings to our work because we believe it yields the greatest impact for students and best prospects for change.

We do not only speak of diversity and inclusion; we live by it. In our practices, policies, and organiza tional culture, BUILD works to foster a familial environment where we can bring our whole selves to our work knowing that we are enriched by differences in race, skin color, ethnicity, gender, age, nationality, physical abilities, mental and developmental abilities, religion, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, educational background, work styles, political beliefs, cultural practices, perspectives, and passions.

At BUILD, we know that the people we work with, and the communities we serve, are our greatest assets and strengths. Promoting diversity is a central component of our culture and a critically important core value. By respecting, valuing and celebrating diversity, BUILD enhances our unique culture and allows for greater impact in the communities we serve.

The Opportunity

With a heightened national focus on racial and economic inequality, there is a demand for change at this moment. Building on its strong foundation and 20 year reputation, BUILD is well positioned to expand its impact nationally through direct service, digital programs, and advocacy/public policy work. In partnership with the CEO, the President will lead the implementation of BUILD’s new 3 year national growth plan – BUILD Opportunity 2020 – including geographic expansion through licensed partnerships and the development and rollout of a digital transformation strategy. This is an incredible opportunity for an inspira tional, entrepreneurial leader with a long-standing track record of leading an organization to implement digital programs, curriculum or experiences within public schools. The President will build the strategy for the development and execution of the digital program as part of BUILD Opportunity 2020, including the creation of the team. In addition, the President will oversee all programmatic functions of the organization, including managing the National Program Director, National Director of Business Development, and four Regional Executive Directors to ensure they achieve student impact and growth in their regions and departments. We are seeking a candidate who can move BUILD from serving 2,000 direct service students to having an online community of 100,000 users including students, teachers and skills-based volunteers in 5 years.

The President must have a demonstrated commitment to BUILD’s mission and deep commitment to racial equity through innovative solutions. BUILD is seeking a results-oriented leader who is able to translate the organization’s overarching vision and strategy into clear, measurable objectives and plans. Leaders can come from a variety of sectors but combined experience in the private and nonprofit sectors is very attractive.
