About BUILD 

Founded in 1999, BUILD’s mission is to use entrepreneurship to ignite the potential of youth in under-resourced communities and equip them for high school, college and career success. BUILD currently partners with high schools to serve 2,000 students annually in Oakland, East Palo Alto, Washington DC, Boston, and New York. The program is a 4-year high school experience designed to boost student engagement in school and build entrepreneurial, 21st Century skills: communication, collaboration, problem solving, innovation, grit, and self-management. To date, BUILD has incubated over 750 youth businesses, partnered with more than 30 schools and expanded service from one city to five. Entrepreneurship is the hook – college, career, and life success are the goals. 96% of students completing the BUILD program graduate from high school on time, and over 80% go on to college. BUILD envisions an educational system in which all students regardless of background are engaged and prepared for their personal and professional success.

The Opportunity 

With a heightened national focus on racial and economic inequality, there is a demand for change at this moment. Building on its strong foundation and 20 year reputation, BUILD is well positioned to expand its impact nationally through direct service, digital programs, and advocacy/public policy work. In partnership with the CEO, the President will lead the implementation of BUILD’s new 3 year national growth plan – BUILD Opportunity 2020 – including geographic expansion through licensed partnerships and the development and rollout of a digital transformation strategy. This is an incredible opportunity for an inspira tional, entrepreneurial leader with a long-standing track record of leading an organization to implement digital programs, curriculum or experiences within public schools. The President will build the strategy for the development and execution of the digital program as part of BUILD Opportunity 2020, including the creation of the team. In addition, the President will oversee all programmatic functions of the organization, including managing the National Program Director, National Director of Business Development, and four Regional Executive Directors to ensure they achieve student impact and growth in their regions and departments. We are seeking a candidate who can move BUILD from serving 2,000 direct service students to having an online community of 100,000 users including students, teachers and skills-based volunteers in 5 years. 

The President must have a demonstrated commitment to BUILD’s mission and deep commitment to racial equity through innovative solutions. BUILD is seeking a results-oriented leader who is able to translate the organization’s overarching vision and strategy into clear, measurable objectives and plans. Leaders can come from a variety of sectors but combined experience in the private and nonprofit sectors is very attractive.  


Visionary & Entrepreneurial Leadership 

Inspire, lead and manage BUILD’s National Leadership  Team, composed of regional and national leaders, as the  organization navigates through accelerated growth and  change. Ensure the National Leadership Team’s effectiveness  in decision-making, communication and execution on organizational decisions. Manage and provide productive thought-partnership for the Regional Executive Directors serving the Bay Area, Boston,  NYC, and DC while aligning regional work streams to a cohesive national mission and vision.  In partnership with the CEO, develop, manage, and  steward the National Board of Directors, ensuring that they are appropriately engaged and informed. Provide quarterly board reporting on organizational performance against milestones and goals. Commit and act consistently to promote an environment of  diversity, equity, and inclusion across the organization and  in alignment with our racial equity vision.


Business Strategy, Execution & Management 

Lead the strategic vision for BUILD's digital presence, technology sales strategies, and e-Marketing efforts and create the team to deliver this program. 

Lead the expansion of BUILD’s geographic footprint through licensed partnerships and direct-service in collaboration with the Regional Executive Directors and National Director of New Business Development. 

Manage the National Director of New Business Development and National Director of Impact and Organizational Learning to ensure programmatic excellence and reach. 

Partner with the National Leadership Team and the Board to translate strategies and priorities into results-oriented action plans with KPI’s, and ensure effective implementation of these plans across the organization. 

In collaboration with the National Director of Talent, support human capital work, including the recruitment and retention of team members, and promote a culture of learning that values strong links between individual and team performance and overall organizational performance measures. 

In collaboration with the Chief Finance and Operations Officer, provide guidance and leadership in the development of the organization’s regional and national budgets. 

Identify and facilitate the development and management of key strategic partnerships that accelerate our outcomes and impact.


Relationship Builder & Ambassador 

Represent BUILD with partners, supporters and media, and serve as spokesperson for the organization as needed, in partnership with the CEO, to ensure the cultivation of strong relationships with existing and new funders. 

Foster a collaborative and productive work environment that results in team cohesion and camaraderie. 

Possess a high level of emotional intelligence and be able to build trusting relationships internally and externally. 

Create growth opportunities that develop the individual and collective contributions of BUILD’s team members through alignment with the organizational growth strategy, vision, and values.  

Partner with Development colleagues to deliver compelling storytelling that drives public participation and cultivates donor interest, while building the BUILD brand to become a highly visible, nationally recognized leading organization in youth development.



  • Minimum of a BA, ideally with an MBA, MPA, M.Ed. or related advanced degree 
  • At least 15+ years of progressive management experience 
  • A combination of nonprofit and for-profit experience ideal; management of a national, global or multi-site organization required 
  • Proven track record in stewarding complex teams through significant organizational growth and change Demonstrated success in growing and scaling programs and strengthening business models Significant board development, fundraising, marketing/branding and fiscal management experience  
  • Proven management skills overseeing an executive staff and team of 30+ members with a strong commitment to the professional development of staff and exceptional track record of recruiting and retaining a diverse team 
  • A financially savvy and politically astute leader with the ability to set clear priorities, delegate and guide investment in people and systems; keen analytic, organization and problem solving skills that support and enable sound decision making 
  • Excellent coalition building skills with an ability to communicate and work effectively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders; a persuasive negotiator able to achieve consensus amongst differing opinions 
  • Outstanding and enthusiastic presentation and communication skills and the experience and proclivity to be an inspirational and outgoing spokesperson, relationship builder and fundraiser 
  • Experience working in an education technology firm and/or working with local K-12 school districts a plus
